Alberto G (ca) wrote: I have a basic rule when I watch any movie. The movie will be rated as a whole, not by the sum of it's parts. A very good movie with a lousy ending is a bad movie in my book. What was a great 1 hour 43 minutes, went down in the final 2. Open-ended? Nope. Just plain lazy and dumb.

Shmuel G (nl) wrote: A disgusting evil little bit of political correctness that aggrandizes everything wrong with the modern world. The hardworking successful businessman who's fulfilled his dreams is presented as a fool with a sick family. while the mentally ill bum who acts like a dog is made the paradigm of wisdom. Every social norm is mocked, while laziness, adultery and homosexuality are treated with sympathy. If you see this film you'll feel like taking a long shower afterward!

Nate 2 (nl) wrote: I'd give it 7 stars out of 5 if I could, the only word to accurately describe this film is 'Monumental'.

John D (ag) wrote: One of my dad's favorite movies as a kid-- he read us the book when I was a child and would rave about how great the movie was. It was out of print throughout my childhood, but recently was released on DVD. It pretty much lived up to the hype, though it's still not as good as the book.

Andy F (es) wrote: Mediocre run around in the woods which is much in the vein of The Hills Have Eyes. In truth this one has its moments, but it spawned tons of limp sequels.

Jack G (mx) wrote: a 'first-movie' not just in the fact that it is for Kelly Reichardt, but in tone too: a loose kind of noir-ish tale with a more low-key beat and looking forward for when the director really takes a hold of that "mumblecore" thing years later as it's about a mother of two and a 2nd-tier Jack Nicholson character think they've accidentally killed someone and they go on the run... not really(?) It's like the American remake of Breathless I might've wanted instead of the weak one with Richard Gere. It's a little too short to be more than a little festival experiment, but it has some good jazz, some good acting, a few genuinely weird and funny moments (some with a quirky Orthodox Jew who laughs a lot), and a final twist that seems needlessly pessimistic. Not a bad debut, not a great one either, though it does speak to Reichardt as having more of a sense of humor than her other films might lead one to believe.
