Matthew S (br) wrote: Whilst formulaic throughout most of the film, The Set-Up has an edge over many Film Noirs of the period. Centered around an aging (35) boxer played by Robert Ryan who believes almost solely that he can win a fight not realising it's been rigged for him to lose anyway. The fight scenes are convincing enough to make you question if the boxers are actually hitting each other, the film is filled with the tales of dreaming losers. The menace comes in the form of the man who's rigged the fight and what the outcome will be when Ryan's character eventually wins. The ending is apt as are the cameos that are repeatedly returned to by the camera and a testimony to Robert Wise's directoral skill.

The plot twists and surrealism make you wonder which parts are real which fake and which never happened in the first place. Sion Sono is a bold filmmaker and takes on subjects like pedophilia, incest, sexual perversion and trans-sexuality. This film comes nowhere near Suicide Club for me, but it's just as dark and twisted as that was. The performances are fantastic and the soundtrack phenomenal. But I was left rather dissatisfied.

The story is simple two parents meet over a fight between their sons & one son is seriously injured & their true prejudices & insecurities quickly arise. The performances & dialogue in this film is sensational & it's also really funny & has such a honesty to the characters. It's a short feature & set basically in a lounge room but the performances are so rich it's keeps you enthralled. A unique divergence from Polanksi but a welcomed one.
