Andrew S (de) wrote: The heart of If I Want To Whistle, I Whistle lies in the last 30 minutes. Before that though, we spend the first hour getting to know our subject. Silviu is nearing his final days in what seems to me to be a minimum-security prison. It's unclear what he did, but he's a good kid, so he doesn't seem to be capable of doing something too wrong. Perhaps he was hanging around the wrong crowd, I thought to myself. However, we start to get answers as the film develops. Silviu gets an unexpected visit from his younger brother, who comes to tell him his mother would like to take him to Italy with her. Silviu asks what he told her, and he replies "I told her I had to see you first." The circumstances following this conversation are what drive the rest of the film. Eventually, Silviu's mother shows up, and we can make inferences about the family dynamic, Silviu's childhood and any other questions that come up. In the end, due to the huge emotional stress on him, Silviu does something we never expected to see from him. At the same time I think he can be sympathized with, for two reasons. One, we know his current situation, and assume that life before prison probably wasn't any different; therefore the character he developed from childhood is not one that can handle the rough patches in life. Two, we can relate to him because we are all human. While most of us hopefully have the self-control to control are actions, we all understand the rage we are capable. Emotions are tough to conquer and sometimes they make us do things that two minutes later we look back and say "what was I thinking?" The actor who plays Silviu is brilliant. He exposed the human soul as what it is, something that is fragile and capable of anything when it is damaged. Check it out on netflix instant streaming. I'd be shocked if you aren't just a little shaken up by it.

I had an eye for Zoe Lister-Jones from Arranged and had to check this one out. Two main actors also happen to be director and producer. Great to see Frances Benahmou also from Arranged as a small supporting role.

I thought they could have gone further with the gay plot...maybe a kiss would have been nice? Lots of white buffed bums and some really good acting. Enjoyable!
