The film feels like a work that is intellectually teasing, and hiding its soul to confuse you. Cronenberg's bugs are as revoltingly delightful as ever, and Weller plays Burrough's counterpart character convincingly, but the lack of substance in this film makes for a dissatisfying aftertaste.

This one is basically a teenage love story from its beginning but as it continues the plot and characters become much more serious with darker tones. It explores the social issues of being a teenager in love in the twenties and then switches to a full out tragedy but comes around a gives us a very satisfying ending although no prototypical hollywood happy ending which makes it all the more satisfying. Amazing performances by a stellar cast highlighted by Wood, Beatty(in his debut), and Pat Hingle as Beatty's father.

The cast is top notch and the film is funny, gut-wrenching, disgusting, sad...and sometimes all at the same time. I remember years ago struggling to get through it, as I was both less mature and a bit grossed out by certain scenes early on. But as I have grown up, it felt time to finally give this a fair shake, and I am glad I did. It really is a great film.
