(mx) wrote: Simply better than the original. Better plot, much better acting. Obviously the assassins are over the top but that's the mindless fun bit. In terms of the core characters the acting is surprisingly good for a low budget film. I found this tidy, short but a decent film.

(ru) wrote: The first two thirds is a beautifully observed and stunningly acted portrayal of a family, and indeed Japan, falling apart in a post-bubble implosion of redundancy and youth emigration. The screenplay trips up over itself in the final act with a series of improbable coincidences for each character, but the acting remains strong to the end.

"Born to Be Blue" has the usual musical biopic roots but the acting is strong here and it's a solid effort from Canadian filmmaker Robert Budreau. With this movie and Don Cheadle's upcoming Miles Davis biopic "Miles Ahead", April is definitely going to be a great month for movies about jazz.Chet Baker struggled with heroin use for a long time but he fought tremendous odds to make it back to the music scene. "Born to Be Blue" is not a great biopic but it's still worth seeing, you can see it either in theaters or on demand. During the 1950's and 60's, Chet Baker (Hawke) was one of the most renowned and famous jazz musicians ever, he was later ranked one of the best jazz artists of all time, right up there with Miles Davis. We first see Baker being hired to play himself in a movie about his earlier years when he first started using heroin. He has struggled with his addiction for years but that's what keeps his career going. However, one day when he goes out on a date with a would-be actress named Jane (Carmen Ejogo), Baker gets beaten up by a group of thugs. He survives the incident but his front teeth get smashed up and his embouchure is gone, that means it will be pretty difficult to play the trumpet again. With his career now tarnished, Baker aims to get back in the game but it won't be easy. He also tries to clean up his act by stop doing heroin and remain loyal to the love of his life.Ethan Hawke can certainly take on any challenging role he wishes, that's why he's one of our very best actors working today. The story is moving and the cinematography by Steve Cosens is great to look at but I felt that the movie needed to be more loose and tighter. Nevertheless, "Born to Be Blue" is a compelling biopic with terrific performances and fine jazz music.
