Acapulco Gold

Acapulco Gold

A flighty, dull peek at the underground marijuana distribution system of the early 1970s, complete with tie dye, VW buses and a soft-focused romp through fields of hemp at sunset. Stereotypically '70s in almost every fashion, it's shot on cheap stock with a bad soundtrack, boring subjects and jumpy editing. It's interesting in a purely historical sense, as we get a pretty good idea of where law enforcement stood in regards to the substance a decade before Nancy Reagan instituted the war on drugs, but viewers out for a bit more insight are due to be sorely disappointed. It's cool to see the narrator reach out of a moving car to grab a fistful of buds off of a roadside plant, but that's about the extent of the excitement. (IMDb)

Ashley H (ru) wrote: Delivering Milo is a disappointing film. It is about a guardian angel has who 24 hours to convince a soul that life on Earth is worth the effort. Anton Yelchin and Albert Finney give terrible performances. The screenplay is badly written. Nick Castle did a horrible job directing this movie. I was not impressed with this motion picture.

James C (ag) wrote: Strange, cold film about a petty thief who becomes the lover of a dominitrix. The most intriguing thing is the design of her abode, which has a petit bourgeois apartment above a dungeon, linked by a ladder which can be let down or drawn up to gain access. The implication of this seems to be that there's a link between the pleasures derived from a BDSM scene and those derived from a more normative relationship - in the end, both are about pleasure and power. Some haunting scenes, especially one where a horse is killed in a knacker's yard. Depardieu's performance is typical of his 70s studies of masculinity in crisis. The film is a kind of celebration of risk taking - the characters at the denouement foreshadow Cronenberg's auto-perverts in Crash - and a "do your own thing" type of liberation narrative. That the script doesn't excavate either where Ogier's wealthy clients get their money, nor the effect their exhibitionism and risk-taking might have on innocent by-standers shows that, whilst director Schroeder might think he has the gumption to explore "dangerous" and "outrageous" subject matter, he doesn't have the guts to really delve into the social implications of his characters and their lifestyles.

Zachary M (mx) wrote: Truly intense. For a movie set on such a simple premise, you're watching one guy locked in a box for 90 minutes, you'd think there wouldn't be much to it. If you thought that, you'd be wrong. With each person he interacts with, via phone calls, you see a new dynamic or layer to the situation. Wither it's dealing with the people who kidnaped him, the FBI agents trying to find him, or his own company screwing him out of his insurance for his family. The film is probably most notable for the ending, which is super effective to be sure, but there's more to it than that. Which is a shame a lot of people I know who talk about this movie only seem to bring up is its climax. For everyone out there who is trying to make a film on a small budget, my advice would be to watch this and take careful notes in order to extract the most tension and fear from your product as possible.
