Grant S (kr) wrote: Unoriginal, predictable, melodramatic yet dull.Detachment doesn't tackle a new subject. Delinquent kids and teachers'inability to teach or control them has been a theme since the 1950s(Blackboard Jungle anyone?). However, with each of these sorts ofmovies you hope that there is something new to be added. If there aremovies that add to the discussion, Detachment isn't one of them.Rather than try to present solutions, it just shows the problems. Youwould think Adrien Brody's character represents the solution but hischaracter is too implausible to be true: idealistic and overlygoody-two-shoesy. Plus, is he really the solution? (Any more andthere'd be spoilers). If anything, the movie is telling us: don't be ateacher and, more broadly, don't have kids. The plot is quite predictable. Some events are signposted far inadvance. The plot isn't hard to figure out in advance, especially as you have somuch time to work it out, the movie progresses so slowly.Sure, there's heaps of melodrama, people throwing things, kids beingall aggro, ridiculous dialogue and sub-plots, but it's fairly empty. Lots of pretense and bluster, but no substance.

Ashli H (mx) wrote: An interesting and in a way heartbreaking movie, well worth a watch even if it's just for the amazing acting by the cast.

Wyland C (br) wrote: My mom told me this story on how scared she got of this movie at a sleepover. So I decided to watch it, and it didn't really scare me, but it would be pretty scary for that time. I loved the music, it was creepy and original music. I did think the ending was a little predictable.

Brian S (br) wrote: I think the Disney people had a wild idea to make a live-action movie about two kids with magic powers to help show off their Disney-ness. they didn't have any real good story ideas, they just wanted to get the sucker made. the result, I imagine, was this movie. the story is awful. the children's dialogue is some of the worst expositional nonsense I've ever heard (although their acting, given the circumstances, isn't half bad). the adult characters were vapid cliches and the star casting was just insulting. if you want to show kids spaceships and dancing puppets, take them to a planetarium or theatre--don't drain their brain cells and yours with this movie.

Ethan P (es) wrote: Cold Mountain is a beautiful drama about that gives a backwoods portrayal of the brutality and cruelty that was so abundant during the civil war. The acting is excellent, the characters are very interesting, the story is epic and the battle scenes are thrilling. Nicole Kidman is magnetic, Renee Zellwegger is awesome as her companion, Jude Law makes a great disenchanted soldier and Hoffman gives his role as a dirty preacher a lot of depth.
