Likeable turns by Vanessa Redgrave, Joss Ackland, and Imelda Staunton notwithstanding, this movie had very little meat to offer. One positive, I'll grant it, is the ever-precious sense of camaraderie that can develop from a motley assortment, and Hayley Atwell, spunking her way out of proper acting, led this group to whiff that nourishing core of 'group likeability.' But undone by the total lack of surprise and a paltry script - as well as not at all buying that all these middle-aged folks know the words to "How About You," I kind of want to leave this movie behind. And unlike Hayley Atwell's trite protag, I don't intend to return.

(it) wrote: The third and weakest film in the Major League series. This time the film stars Scott Bakula who must get the Twins minor league baseball team back on track. The story is okay. The film does have some funny moments. And it was great to have Bob Uecker in this film as the play by play man again. Only worth a watch if your a baseball movie fan or you liked the other Major League movies.

The sex issues are more interesting. Gael Morel (my favorite) as Francois needs to deal with his homosexuality, handsome Stephane Rideau as Sergio needs to marry a woman and Elodie Bouchez is heartwarming as Maite who wants to find a mature man The politics is less appealing and is embodied by brooding Frederic Gorny as the Algerian recluse, Henri, and Michele Moretti as Mrs. Alvarez, the cynical teacher. The movie is beautifully shot and direction is crisp. Although the movie is slow, the scenes are well edited so you get to bond with the characters. I watched the movie a second time and it's the second viewing that really made me appreciate it. It's a well-awarded movie winning Best Foreign Film from the NY & LA film critics. The ending takes place at a picturesque lake in southern France where each character comes to terms with their personal issues. I was so motivated by these characters that I wasn't ready for the bittersweet ending.
(it) wrote: A rare directorial foray for Eugene Levy, this has a decent cast having a good time making this fairly silly movie. Does contain the line "To cheat is French but to get caught, that is American."
