Arise, My Love

Arise, My Love

In 1939, American Tom Martin, who fought in the Spanish Civil War, awaits execution at the hands of the Fascist victors when reporter Augusta 'Gusto' Nash, for a scoop, aids him in an audacious escape. Of course, Tom tries to romance Gusto; but though she likes him, her career comes first, and Tom himself prefers freedom-fighting to settling down. Comedy becomes drama as their mixed feelings lead them on a circuitous path through the deepening chaos and catastrophe of the early days of World War II.

Ethan B (jp) wrote: I know most people hate this film, and I suppose I can see why. However, I personally liked it a lot. Although there's not much reason for the story and it is just a mashup of a bunch of funny ideas that are put into scenes, it actually has some really good bits. There are tons of quotables and running jokes in this one too. The humor in this film is found in the little things. Duff's mom, Elaine's gift baskets, Uncle Jack, John's lawyer, the non-sensical jokes. For a 13 year old boy this movie is gold, and for an avid moviegoer this film seems dumb and pointless. Well, it's definitely dumb and pointless, but that's the point. You might have to watch it a 2nd time to really understand it. I've seen this film 4 times I think, and I still enjoy it. I know it doesn't make much sense because we all know that the events in this film would never happen and the way the characters handle them are so unbelievable. And considering the ridiculous script, the acting is pretty impressive. The direction is kinda weak and there's almost no character depth, but if you take this film for what it is--an asinine farce--then you won't end up hating it quite as much.Twizard Rating: 79

Sterlin R (gb) wrote: A very disappointing sequel. The action is lame, the acting is mediocre, and the biggest problem is it feels like a RoboCop film for kids (probably because of the PG-13 rating). Not worth watching at all.

Paul D (kr) wrote: A suspense thriller about cops, with a cold, menacing, evil Richard Gere at the top of his game, and a great Andy Garcia. A dark, brooding, disturbing movie that kept me glued to the screen.

David G (ag) wrote: Cannon action flick that reunites American Ninja co-stars Michael Dudikoff (the man you get when Chuck Norris is just not wooden enough) and Steve James as ex-secret service agent Matt Hunter (the "best in the business" of course) and best friend/political hopeful Larry Richards as they find themselves up against the Pentangle - a secret fascist society of the rich and powerful who swig champagne and preach white superiority by day and hunt victims in the Louisiana bayous by night. If you're a fan of Cannon then get ready for a fun ride as all the staples are here - corny dialogue, cheesy soundtrack, over the top villains (John P. Ryan turns in a typically maniacal performance), daft action and absolutely no subtlety whatsoever. If you're not a Cannon fan then run away. Run far, far away. Right now!The only real downside is the cliffhanger ending. It would have been OK I guess if a sequel had been made, but it never was!Oh, and if you were wondering, the time between Steve James' first appearance and him taking his shirt off is 36 minutes. Yes, I timed it.

Jonathan B (kr) wrote: I'm a huge fan of Agatha Christie and Miss Marple is by far and away my favourite of her creations. The finest portrayal of this character is without doubt that of Joan Hickson in the BBC TV series which nailed the character perfectly. Margaret Rutherford was about as far away from the character as written as it is possible to be and yet, she is fantastic in this movie and others in the series directed by George Pollock. These movies are basically good, old-fashioned British comedies, packed with comic touches and full of stalwarts of the post-war film industry.Rutherford is the kind of dotty, busybody pantomime dame that we love. Never better than when tottering on top of a crate of Mackeson stout so she can peer through a window or faking heart attack after dancing the twist in a bid to snare the murderer. Her great big, jowly, St. Bernard's face wobbling away under a preposterous hat is a joy to behold and she delivers her lines with perfect comic timing.Crisply shot, and with a magical 60's score, this film is a delightful piece of entertainment, every bit as good as I remember it from first seeing it as a child.

Anuj S (it) wrote: Not only it is bad but it even ranks in some of the worst bad movies ever made

Lee H (it) wrote: While I appreciate the true story behind it, this film seemed a bit superficial to me. It's a decent DVD rental highlighting a courageous Coast Guard rescue that took place in the 1950's.
