Luke E (br) wrote: Based on True Events centering on the youth of Modern Day Ireland, 'What Richard Did' is a fine intelligent and absorbing drama, following the tough times of an adolescent involved in a violent incident that may change him forever. The film never over exaggerates its bleak tones among its smooth scripting, deft editing and fine performances from such a gifted cast. Highly recommened for the most persistant viewer in search of realistic drama on such a suttle and refreshing scale.

Sometimes its bad and I buy a bag of skittles, but I didn't want to do that this time, so I took a walk to the library; I knew that the 6th floor digital media center always had a jar of delicious gummy bears out. Free candy! I grabbed a handful and looked through the computer to see if there were any movies I wanted to rent (also to validate my coming up there and taking candy). I had nothing in mind, but the librarian was right there and very friendly as always. I had been feeling pretty down in the dumps, and so I asked for an uplifting, feel-good movie, and this is the one he brought out. It did not disappoint, Midnight In Paris was wonderful, thoughtful, funny; a feel-good movie for sure!

He has a way with dark humor and I loved it in War of the Roses. In Duplex, it doesn't quite work all that well though. I love the premise, but it was just missing something. The old lady is a really good character, but I don't think she's used as well as she could have been. This could have been amazing.Alex and Nancy are a happily married couple. Alex is a writer, who is currently working on his second novel. Nancy is a journalist. They find their dream home, which happens to be a Duplex. One problem though, there's an old woman living on the second floor. Alex and Nancy think she's going to die soon, so they grab the place, believing she is a sweet old woman. A lot of back and forth goes on and it turns into just another escalating bullshit driven comedy, which is sad, because I enjoyed a lot of the details put into the story, just not the character interactions. All in all, Duplex is nothing more than an average comedy. Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore play pretty much their same film personas. I happen to like them both, but for people who aren't fans of theirs, this is definitely not one to watch. It wasn't a complete waste of time for me. It had spells that were really entertaining and hilarious, but they were too few and far between.

THIS MOVIE HAS GIVING ME 2 THINGS: AN GLIMPSE INTO WHAT HELL WILL LOOK LIKE, AND THAT I NEED TO BE CHECKED INTO THE NEAREST INSANE ASYLUM ASAP. THIS MOVIE IS POSSIBLY THE SPAWN OF SATAN AND SHOULD BE BANISHED INTO ANY DIMENSION OTHER THEN OUR OWN.
David S (mx) wrote: John Dahl's first film and it is a solid, though not significant, debut. Dahl's film is a classical throwback to Noir with Kilmer starring as a hard boiled private eye detective who fakes the death of a woman... yet complications ensue. Plot twists and turns abound, but the film follows so closely to the Noir model that they become predictable. Still, the film is tight, focused, and never boring. Not bad, just nothing really special... A rental for most but essential viewing for fans of Dahl's work.
