(us) wrote: This movie isn't as bad as Rotten Tomatoes makes it out to be. I watched it and it wasn't half bad. It's worth a watch. Check it out.
(ag) wrote: It's pretty poorly paced, but Tim Robbins plays a good baddie. It could have been much better.
(us) wrote: Plot? What Plot? The synopsis made it sound good so I picked it out at Blockbuster and gave it a chance for the first half hour, until it just got blatently stupid. I was hoping around the middle that by the end I would understand what the hell just happened, but was severely disappointed. Dreams within dreams within dreams within dreams... I think the only point of this movie was to see if ANYONE could figure it out. It may have been good as a book but it fails horribly as a movie. The only redeeming quality was, despite the awful plot, obviously awful directing, and horrible 'effects' (i.e. deer's blood is not purple the last time I checked), the only thing that allowed me to give it a star (since one can't rate zero), is I've seen incredibly worse acting, although this isn't too good either.

(au) wrote: Great cheesy 1980's comedy horror. I'm rating this as the 12 year old I was when I seen it. If you want to introduce kids to scary and the concept that what is seen as evil by some may not be judged as such by others then this is a great movie to sit them down to. Cheesy as it is now it does have something. I still remember every scene 28 years later and I'm still looking for that other world just beyond the veil.

The film is sometimes billed as a sequel to THE FRENCH CONNECTION, but its not. It does have that gritty 1970s decaying New York look that THE FRENCH CONNECTION (and so many other films in that period) had, has Roy Scheider in the cast (without Gene Hackman), and Sonny Grosso served as the technical supervisor and gave the script-writers the idea for the story. The plot concerns an elite unit of NYPD detectives who discover that a third party has been targeting the mobsters that they are investigating and kidnapping them (can underworld types go to the police about this sort of thing? Not likely). Its not as good as THE FRENCH CONNECTION but its a pretty solid "Cops & robbers" film. Richard Lynch and Tony Lo Bianco would soon be starring in Larry Cohen's GOD TOLD ME TO.
