Paul B (au) wrote: Though competent in every respect, Heavy has a hard time lifting itself out of, and transcending, the era in which it was made. A completely distracting and too-loud-in-the-mix soundtrack only makes matters worse. I wish David Patrick Kelly [Luther from The Warriors] would unexpectedly show up in more of the films and television I watch.

Brad B (mx) wrote: This a long and slowly paced movie based on a book.Still is an interesting little story and memorable for being Jimmy Cagney's last appearance on the big screen.Coaxed out of retirement at an advanced age old Jimmy still has the chops to deliver a very convincing performance! This had the potential to be a really great movie but the story wanders into too many sub stories and looses it's focus! The real main story isn't totally clear until much too late in the picture and by this time the viewer has lost it.Foreman does do a good a beautiful job of bringing America in Victorian times to the screen! If nothing else watch it to see the master Cagney on the screen one last time, he effortlessly steals the picture away from this cast with no challengers!

Aging master Fritz Lang keeps things interesting, despite a weak performance from a past his prime, alcoholic, Dana Andrews. Lang's last American film.
