(nl) wrote: Pure amateur garbage. Ultra cheap in every aspect, the acting is awful, the quality of the film is horrible. Poorly pieced together, the direction is very unprofessional. a mess from start to finish.

(gb) wrote: For a definitive look at the Clash, the documentary Westway to the World is the one to see. But this oral history of Joe Strummer certainly has its heart in the right place, with a nice (perhaps overly sentimental) framing device. There are new interviews with nearly all of the key players in Strummer's story as well as many celebrity friends and fans. The movie gives a bit too much weight to his underwhelming Mescaleros-era music. But the fact that Strummer found renewed happiness late in his life is comforting to consider, and also provides a satisfying arc to the story.

(us) wrote: From the early Schwarzenegger/Willis film school and featuring many of the same up porting actors. Carl Weathers makes a passable action hero though some of the cameo scenes are a little painful (cue the hairdresser). Probably a guilty pleasure at the end of the day.
(gb) wrote: At first I thought the casting of Jeanne Crain was totally absurd! I mean she doesn't even look a little black. She's as white as they come. I mean that was really a tough sale at first. But as the movie progressed her casting really began to work for me as it really served to exemplify how absurd racism actually is, how meaningless racial classification actually is. I'm not sure the movie would have had the same poignant effect had "Pinky" been more obviously of mixed heritage. The sting comes from the fact that she truly should be considered "white" but the simple idea of a black ancestor damns her. She IS as black as her grandmother even though her skin is the opposite color. Its pretty darn deep.
