(es) wrote: Rare - a French comedy. Even rarer for a French movie: it's funny and unpretentious. Good parody of James Bond movies, with some scenes that could be straight out of the Mel Brooks playbook. Not a surprise that this is directed by Michel Hazanavicius and stars Jean Dujardin, the director and star, respectively, of the brilliant The Artist. Direction is solid - free flowing and energetic. Plot is a bit random at times though.Great performance by Jean Dujardin as OSS 117. Solid supporting cast.
(us) wrote: No big budget, no special effects - it was pretty damn good, made me want to buy a motorcycle! A good laugh and some really entertaining dialogue, a proper old-fashoned road movie - slightly surreal in places, but then I guess it would be with 'shrooms in the morning coffee! :-)

(br) wrote: There's not enough here to rank it with the best of De Palma's satires (Hi, Mom and Phantom of Paradise, if you can consider the latter that), but it's such a bizarre movie that it kind of works almost in spite of itself. De Palma's got a lot of verve with his direction, which is to be expected, but any moment with Orson Welles is awesome and there's a few really genuinely laugh out loud moments here. It's really one of those near "lost" movies that not surprisingly never really found an audience. It's a true oddity, and I mean that as sort of a compliment (sadly De Palma got fired during editing, though maybe it's not hard to see why).

(us) wrote: In my opinion, 42nd Street (along with 'The Gold Diggers of 1933') is probably The definitive movie musical of the depression era. It is deliciously pre-code. It has lots lot lovely girls showing a lot of skin (just watch the number called 'Pettin' in the Park'). Unfortunately, the movie suffers from from serious miscasting. Ruby Keeler as the ingenue turned leading lady is utterly charmless and charisma-free. Her line delivery is flat, and her dancing appears clumsy. However, the BEST parts of the movie come whenever Ginger Rogers and Una Merkel appear on screen. Ginger as 'Anytime Annie Lowell', has the looks and the dancing ability that Ruby Keeler is sadly lacking. It's too bad Rogers and Merkel didn't have more screen time. They're both adorable and funny in the 'Shuffle off to Buffalo' number. I saw the stage production of 42nd Street, which was better than the film, but this movie is definitely worth checking out as a depression era historical piece and for a young, beautiful Ginger Rogers early in her career.
(ag) wrote: With the world having thought him dead for twenty years, Butch Cassidy(Sam Shepard), aka James Blackthorn, can afford to relax on his ranch in Bolivia and spend some quality time with Yana(Magaly Solier). Still, he is restless and has gotten tired of waiting for Che Guevara to show up, so he sells his horses in order to return to his home country. But an altercation with Eduardo(Eduardo Noriega), a Spanish national, separates him from his horse and his money. To make it up to him and save his own life, Eduardo mentions the mine he just robbed. All of which gets Butch thinking of the old days when he used to ride with the Sundance Kid(Padraic Delaney) and Etta Place(Dominique McElligott, of "Hell on Wheels"). The best part of "Blackthorn" is the beautiful Bolivian scenery, especially the salt flats sequence. At the same time, that along with an extended cameo overshadow the lived-in and low-key performance from Sam Shepard which also fits in well with Butch Cassidy being more of a passive anti-hero this time around. But if you are going to the trouble to take a legendary outlaw like Cassidy out of cultural retirement, shouldn't one at least think of a better story that can stand on its own? For example, nothing against Bolivia of which we get some valuable history here, I think it would have worked out significantly better if this had been about Butch Cassidy already living in the United States as something of a living ghost.
