Andr Dussollier (Consul Raoul Nordling) and Niels Arestrup (General Dietrich von Choltitz) have a mesmerizing chemistry on screen and allow you to see the many layers of each individual's personality.Volker Schlndorff's direction is tight and keeps a very fast pace - representative of the pace the two protagonists were feeling (although each from a different perspective.) The director, who was born before the holocaust (just years - 1939 in Wiesbaden, Germany) and the leads Arestrup (1949 - Montreuil, France) and Dussollier (1946 - Annecy, France) were born after the Shoah bring deep personal experience to the film that is retrospective and very honoring.Michel Amathieu's cinematography style for this film is dark and gritty - very representative of the emotions in Paris (and all of France) during the summer of 1944.Virginie Bruant's editing allowed for a very tight telling of the story that was cognitive - some editors create large storyline jumps that leave the viewer wondering what was missing and distracts from the actual experience of the film's narrative and acting. The dialogue in both French and German moved well and was easy to follow. My only annoyance with the film were the subtitles. I am not a huge fan of subtitles, but I do believe that they should be only one line (not two or more) and at the very bottom of the frame. To his credit, Jrg Lemberg's musical score was not overpowering - rather the composer let the script, the actors, and the director and crew tell the story. It was a nice compliment to a wonderful film.

The whole thing is good, though, and a great deal more entertaining than the rather rote Sweet Movie.

Clearly more time was spent casting the titties and making the silly props and costumes than, like, writing the story or anything. Also, no one can act. Sound quality sucks, which is a big problem, because it is the talkiest most monologue-laden "superhero" movie I have ever seen. Not funny. Everyone looked like they were having a lot of fun making it, which was really annoying, because I wasn't having any fun. Almost unwatchable, despite it's surprisingly still-relevant themes. " Freedom = caca," indeed.

(gb) wrote: It has the makings of looking like a moderately made cop action/drama, but honestly I felt no reason why anyone would care for this character! He's obviously racist and there's no conviction to believe he would even want to help his deceased ex partner. It's damn inconsistent, and the plot doesnt even make clear what it really is. Revenge story? Justice mercenary? Inside Job plot? Hell! Is it a set up? NO! none of it makes sense.
