The scenes of violence are horrific in a particularly disturbing way, as they occur sandwiched between fairly mundane circumstances. The first violent altercation easily stands as one of the most horrifying scenes I've witnessed in a long time. Overall, not a bad movie and worth watching; if you want to turn it off 3/4 of the way through, though, you won't regret it.

I always fall in love with her. she is "the" actor for me. my all time favorite and I hope that she wins more Oscars as she is well deserving and very dedicated star.

Beautiful Technicolor cinematography of lovely people and places lends a hint of post card picture artifice to the whole endeavor. The sort of thing one might expect as an indie release these days but a rather startling - and startlingly successful - film from a major studio in the 40s.
