Gil Scott-Heron, one of rap's earliest (and unfortunately unknown) pioneers, gets his full due in Black Wax, the 1982 documentary recently reissued on video. Interspliced between performance footage of Scott-Heron and his Midnight Band are vignettes of him walking around Washington D.C., spouting his views on then-President Reagan (dubbed "Ray-Gun") and generally dropping knowledge. The live performance features many of Scott-Heron's best-known hits, including "Johannesburg," "Winter in America," and "Angel Dust," among others. Warm, intelligent, and insightful throughout, Scott-Heron is clearly enjoying himself and the opportunity to espouse his views. A must for any fan of Scott-Heron's, and definitely worth a look for fans of the funkier jazz music of the mid to late 1970's.

Il faut dire que le personnage principal, timide maladif, est terriblement bien rendu. Ses tics de langages alourdissent un peu plus ses longs monologues emprunts, saccads, saturs d'excuses, de remerciements et d'analogies obscures. Comment ne pas tre aussi agac alors que ses proches, d'autant que la camra ne quitte que rarement un cadrage trs serr ? L'ambiance navigue souvent entre pesanteur et drisoire, lourdeur des paroles et banalit creuse des situations. Mais peu peu, ces partis-pris extrmes deviennent doucement fascinants, leur cohrence, leur folie larve discrtement tire. Surgissent alors quelques moments magnifiques, comme une scne superbe d'examen noy dans des lucubrations vaguement philosophiques. Ainsi, un vritable morceau d'indpendance cinmatographiques, depuis ces tics fauchs jusqu' sa profonde personnalit.

Des interprtations de qualit autour d'une intrigue soud autour de ces personnages grandement dvelopp ont tout pour captiver et porter un regard convaincant, convaincu, mais surtout fort pertinent sur ces lourds sujets sans dlaisser un certain bonheur lors de l'coute d'une part du plaisir de l'adolescence en un sens, mais galement de la lourdeur du ct invitable du monde adulte. Belle russite qui s'coute avec nuance et ravissement.

He meets an array of individuals, many Mexicans and is taken in by their hospitality. He also steals from the wealthy people that travel through his territory and has a strange taste in women, to say the least. In current day Arizona, this film would be reviewed by critics as severely dated. In current day British Columbia, which is where I am from, it would be dismissed. Lame western is mainly screechy and annoying, and drags on and on. Westerns like "Red River" and "The Searchers" exceed two hours and are heck of a lot better than this and also much faster to get through. Very boring!

I can't believe I enjoyed a movie with James Franco in it, either! This movie is clearly made by one of the Coppola girls, with the focus on ennui and female empowerment. Can't wait to see what Gia does next.
