Niraj V (es) wrote: Sanjay Gupta is back, and how!!! After spending 8 years away from the Director's Chair, he has picked up on the story of the first ever "encounter" on record by the Bombay Police. The movie revolves around the rise and fall of Manya Surve, the first gangster to have taken on the might of the Ibrahim brothers in the late 70s. Due to the lack of any documented evidence or eyewitness accounts, the movie draws heavily from S Hussain Zaidi's book "From Dongri To Dubai", which is a must read for any of you out there who have any interest in the entire underworld scene in Bombay, and also some amount of cinematic license is used to make the storytelling more engrossing.John Abraham, in the lead role of Manya Surve, is a total surprise. I was certain that this was a huge casting blunder, but I'm glad to have been proven wrong. Gupta extracts a performance from Abraham which is arguably his best ever performance out of the 20+ films he has done in his 10 year career. The emotions he portrays without saying a word really show that in the hands of a good director, Abraham is able to come good as an actor. (The scene where he's trying to break up the fight between some goons and his step brother is a case in point). He has also managed to look like the middle class Maharashtrian boy, but his dialogue delivery was a bit unconvincing for the Dadar-Parel area where he was from. However, that may be overlooked. His physical presence was, and has always been, commanding. I expect that this performance will be a game changer for Abraham.Anil Kapoor, as Inspector Isaque Bagwaan, does a very competent job, thankfully making us forget about the buffoonery from Race 2. Kapoor, along with Mahesh Manjrekar and Ronit Roy, portrays very effectively, the frustration of the Bombay Police in that era when their hands were tied due to excessive red tape etc.Sonu Sood and Manoj Bajpai, as the Ibrahim brothers, are menacing and have that swagger that comes with being the uncrowned kings of a city like Bombay.Tushar Kapoor and Siddhant Kapoor (no relation) stand out as members of Surve's gang, and seeing that this is only Siddhant Kapoor's debut, there is a very bright future for him, but he must be careful with role selection, or he will go the way of his father.Kangana Ranaut, as Vidya - Surve's love interest, is definitely mis-cast. I was unable to find her convincing in either her style, appearance or dialogue delivery, so it looks like Gupta got it a bit wrong here. The star of the show, however, is one that you never ever see on the screen even once. Milap Zaveri. Who, you ask?? Well he is the dialogue writer of this movie, and boy does he do a great job!!! Fast paced dialogues, a lot of humour, some expletives - all in keeping with the times that this movie was set in. I am sure that over a period of time, some of the dialogues will make their way into the selection of legendary hindi film dialogues. Finally, last but not least, is the man himself - Sanjay Gupta. This is the genre he excels in and he doesn't let us down. Every scene is well composed, the camera angles are also well chosen and he never lets the pace slacken. Explosions, gun battles, fisticuffs, knives.......its all happening here and keeps to glued to the screen. My few gripes here are:- The item song with Priyanka Chopra didn't really work on screen. Its a very catchy tune, but somehow she doesn't do justice to it the way Sunny Leone and Sophie Choudhary do to theirs.- The use of Chroma in certain scenes was far too obvious and thus made it look tacky.- Maybe a short commentary at the start on the background of the underworld would have made it a bit less confusing for the average viewer trying to follow all the characters (Like how it was at the start of Shootout At Lokhandwala)However, all in all, this is a MUST WATCH, so do not miss it on the big screen. Once you've seen it, then go buy the book "From Dongri To Dubai" and enjoy even more!!!!!!!!

Mayank A (jp) wrote: Another time travel movie, has lots of originality and as always some confusion, paradoxes and flawed concepts, it comes with the genre and is understandable, still some really cool scientific concepts which I only understood after some explanation videos on you tube. What is commendable is the film was written, directed, produced, edited and scored by Shane Carruth, who also stars in the main role. Amazing effort for a very low budget movie which looks really good.
Trish H (jp) wrote: Very good movie, though it got really sad and I cried through the whole last 10 minutes of it.
Frances H (ca) wrote: Interesting, but I didn't really like the end. It was a cop out. And I find it interesting that this film made less than 2 million and was rated by the critics at 92%, but Twilight which only rated with 49% of critics made 365 million dollars.
