Andrew L (es) wrote: Where as all the previous depictions of Batman (the campy TV series, Tim Burton's darker interpretations & even Schumacher's aweful revamps) drew their inspirations from the ever evolving 'comics', Christopher Nolan has focused on the graphic novels - namely 'Batman: Year One' & 'The Long Halloween' - & in so doing has created the two greatest superhero movies outside of the original 1978 Superman film. The level of preparation & work that went into the development of the story, the characters, the designs - coupled with a brilliant script, cast, effects & set-pieces shows up exactly what all the Marvel movies are sadly lacking. This films investigation of the origins of Batman is expertly crafted by one of the best directors around at the moment, & the action is far superior to that produced recently by both Spielberg & Bay.

Stunningly vibrant animation, a mysterious spirit world that bursts with imagination and wonder, memorable characters, subtle dark undertones (examination of human greed and the anxiety of moving into a new home), and a great score by Joe Hisaishi. A delightful and sincere masterpiece for people of all ages.

Eric R (ru) wrote: Bill has a rough, gritty life. He works as a stoker on a boat which has docked for the night in New York City. While out on the town he witnesses a young woman attempting to commit suicide by jumping off the dock. He saves her from drowning and a relationship forms between the two of them. Docks of New York is a essentially silent film just for the lighting and cinematography alone. Sternberg and his cinematographer Rosson really create an evocative portrait of the lower class waterfront. The fog drenched night sequences are incredible. The moonlight penetrating through the fog and glistening off the water during the suicide sequence is really something to see. The relationship between the stoker and dance hall girl is very emotionally affecting and genuine. These characters are never romanticized; they both have problems. Bill, being a man of the sea, has had many women and never dreamed of settling down, while Mae problems are mysterious but she clearly has made mistakes in choosing her love interests in the past. The world around them is very pessimistic about love which just makes these two characters journey together even more compelling.
