Ding Bo (Chen Po Lin) and his friends Nan Feng (Fan Bingbing) and Fei Zao aka Fatso (Fei Long) are a trio of 20-something outsiders who have no intention of sitting exams and getting into universities. When they need a new home, they answer an ad placed by lonely, retired Chinese opera singer Chang Yue Qin (Sylvia Chang), who is mourning the death of her son, and move into her sprawling Chengdu apartment. Right off the bat, the four clash over lifestyle and values, with the bratty trio seeing fit to steal from her and invade her privacy. However, slowly but surely a bond among them develops and everyone eventually learns something from the next.

Ding Bo (Chen Po Lin, think a young Takeshi Kaneshiro before the surgeries) and his friends Nan Feng (Fan Bingbing) and Fei Zao aka Fatso (Fei Long) are a trio of 20-something outsider-y types that have no intention of sitting exams and getting into universities. When they need a new home for assorted reasons, they answer an ad placed by lonely, retired Chinese opera singer Chang Yue Qin (the awesome-as-usual Sylvia Chang), who is mourning the death of her son, and move into her sprawling Chengdu apartment. Right off the bat, the foursome clash over lifestyle and values, with the bratty trio seeing fit to steal from her and invade her privacy. Ed A (us) wrote: Led by the phenomenal performance of Adrian Brody (yeah, I was blown away), I'd have to say this was one of the best acted movies of all time. Incredible ensemble cast performances, and it was completely unexpected, because going into it, I didn't think I'd like it at all. It was captivating, to say the least. If you love music and history, this film will keep you glued to the screen. As my friend said, he didn't want it to end, but it ended perfectly. I agree 100%. The actors in this film nailed it when they covered songs by Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf, Etta James and Chuck Berry perfectly. Well written, directed and edited. The soundtrack was great. Best scene was in the studio when Etta James just sang a song without any emotion in her first take. Len Chess stopped her cold and told her the story of the song, from her perspective. When she sang it again, she started crying and put everything into it. She nailed it and it illustrated just how important emotion is to the interpretation of music. Fantastic movie, go see it!

Marvin B (au) wrote: Watching this movie makes you feel that you're really part of the class. The dynamic interactions and intense encounters between the teacher and his students create a very engaging watching experience.

James J (ru) wrote: Have seen it can't remember watching it. Nuff said.

Aephraim S (gb) wrote: Seemed to be going somewhere really interesting (despite the ineptitude of the lead actor), but about 2/3 or 3/4 of the way through, I don't know what happened, maybe the producers got scared, but it just spiraled into vapidity. Hadn't realized it was based on a Leavitt book, and now very curious to see whether the original was more courageous... still, it gets points just for treating several things in a way which I don't think I've seen in films before.

Kristy P (au) wrote: Um...okay. Roll eyes. Nothing great here; except that Nicolas Cage and Sean Penn look funny when they're this young. Other than that, the story seemed pointless to me. A sensitive guy falls in love and tries to help his non-sensitive buddy right before they both leave for the war. That's about it.

Christopher B (jp) wrote: The greatest stuntman ever with his first feature length.

Paul C (es) wrote: Jump scars abound, but nothing worthy of the 'horror' moniker that some have tried to place upon it. If all you can say about a movie is "it scared me", then the movie has failed. Unbelievable plot, some wooden acting and average atmosphere does not a good film make.

Ryan V (gb) wrote: This came during the dark times for Chevy, so it's no surprise that it's not nearly as good as the original.
