Blackity B (ca) wrote: It is somewhat easy to compare this movie to the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, both in terms of design and plot structure. The use of colors, shadows and distorted shapes are a beautiful example of German Expressionism, and that's where the movie is at it's best. The story starts out quite interesting as the rabbi delves into the myth, but then at the end it falls a little flat for me. Like Dr. Caligari, the Golem is a Frankenstein-like monster under the control of his master, who ends up kidnapping a girl and perishing in a somewhat anti-climatic manner. The difference is, I felt that the human characters were more developed in Dr. Caligari, and this there was more tension and drama in it. Still, a good movie for any fan of this movement.
Peter F (ru) wrote: Buuel's elegant and perplexing film is one of his finest master-pieces. Exploring the sexual confusion of a young woman, Belle du Jour is certainly erotic, yet it never comes off in bad-taste, even in it's extra-kinky fantasy sequences. It's not a stretch to see this as one of the first films to capture S+M on screen, but it's done in a way that's psychological and enticing in only a way Buuel could capture. Up there with Polanski's Repulsion as one of the signature feminist films, that happened to be directed by a man.
