Burden of Dreams

Burden of Dreams

For nearly five years, acclaimed German filmmaker Werner Herzog desperately tried to complete one of the most ambitious and difficult films of his career, Fitzcarraldo, the story of one man’s attempt to build an opera house deep in the Amazon jungle. Documentary filmmaker Les Blank captured the unfolding of this production, made more perilous by Herzog’s determination to shoot the most daunting scenes without models or special effects, including a sequence requiring hundreds of native Indians to pull a full-size, 320-ton steamship over a small mountain. The result is an extraordinary document of the filmmaking process and a unique look into the single-minded mission of one of cinema’s most fearless directors.

Matthew J (es) wrote: Quite a beautiful and emotional film, made with all amateur actors who are captivating to watch. Especially Hushpuppy the courageous little star, so memorable. A lot of things happen, a lot of characters are introduced, it was all very nice and imaginative. But it left me wondering; What was the point? What was that all about? It seems to be a soulful and vaguely heartfelt journey about ..........Bravery, culture, community, family and maybe global warming? No one can really describe what is good about this film, they simply agree that it was "very unique" and "poetic". Roger Ebert said "You can turn this film into allegory for what ever you want". I don't like films like that. Too vague. It's unsatisfying.

Scott V (nl) wrote: Highly enjoyable lol. Way better than you'd think. Still a bad movie but a fun one

Tim R (ru) wrote: The concept of Dororo sound like fun, a man must destroy 48 demons to reclaim the body parts his father sold away in order to obtain great power. It's to bad that the film gets dragged down by cheap CG based fights, that are borderline comically bad but mostly just boring, and an over abundance of melodrama. The actors are fine, particularly K Shibasaki who plays a female thief who carries herself like a man and channels the macho samurai spirit very well.

Brandon M (au) wrote: Favorite Spielberg movie after Saving Private Ryan and Shindlers List....just a great movie.

Jason M (ag) wrote: This movie was simply awesome! A Star of a new era for Potter movies.

Tarita W (nl) wrote: I am on a "B" movie roll today! This one is just a mixture of other films with a clever storyline that gets too mushy and looses it's thunder towards the end......but will absolutely make you laugh your butt off!

Helen P (gb) wrote: A film that made millions off the exact systems it heaps dirt on is hailed as art...and I am left wondering why. If it was half an hour shorter, a little more thoughtful and not just completely token in terms of the blather that Pitt's character spouts I might have been convinced that this film deserved serious credit. Bored white-guy loses his mind and looks for unusual thrills is not an original nor very compelling premise - this formula fans claim it satirises through some ingenious self-aware direction just didn't play that way to me. I mean, if it was really a satire it would have been funnier, quicker, rung more true as a representation of something that might actually occur. Instead it plays out as far too sincere, too try-hard. With just enough thought to make younger viewers think it was a smart film, just enough violence to cover the really boring middle of the film, and just enough visual artistry to satisfy anyone who wasn't otherwise fascinated, I get why it hits a chord with a fair few viewers.
