Iris L (de) wrote: Superb documentary about the U.S' economical and political, as well as military involvement in Latin American countries. Organized country by country account, how the U.S got in mostly for economic benefits for multinational corps. and often proceeded to create coups, civil wars, and was a force to destabilize the regime. It often opened the door later, to refugees fleeing the bloodshed that U.S was responsible for. Prepare to shed tears.

Ifiok O (gb) wrote: It becomes painfully obvious during the course of this train wreck that Cedric is not quite the "entertainer" he claims to be; he doesn't really offer much in terms of comedy. This movie is basically a very poor imitation of "National Lampoon's Vacation," in which case you might want to stick with the Griswalds and avoid this bad trip.

Emerald R (ru) wrote: Sometimes there are dumb comedies and sometimes there are smart comedies and sometimes there are comedies without comedyAnd unfortunately this is one of those films. There is not even the slightest hint of hurmour in the 93 minutes.National Lampoon took their name off the title of this film; I'm surprised the city of Las Vegas didn't attempt to get their name removed as well.Taking a trip to that fine town has never been made look so unappealing.I would like to say something positive about this film since it came from a great line of comedies but I can't.Avoid this film at all costs. If you are looking for a Las Vegas based comedies try Swingers, Ocean's 11, The Hangover or even Casino.Featured on Episode 52 of The Emerald Reprobates Podcast

Pavandeep S (es) wrote: This movie is good, the story and acting can seem a little odd here and therel, and some stuff is just weird, but the movie is classy and I guess that's what counts in Harlem. Not a bad movie to catch...

Jamie T (kr) wrote: Pre-dating SHAFT by a year, COTTON COMES TO HARLEM may be considered the real start of the blaxploitation genre; in any case, it actually outclasses SHAFT in nearly every way. The late, great Godfrey Cambridge stars, as detective Gravedigger Jones, alongside Raymond St. Jacques as his partner Coffin Ed Johnson. Cambridge and St. Jacques have a great rapport together; Gravedigger is cool, level-headed, and witty, while Coffin Ed is harsh and righteous, caring less about the fact that money was stolen than the fact that it was stolen from the poverty-stricken residents of Harlem. Cambridge is ideal in Gravedigger's witty moments, but the real delight, for Cambridge fans, is in seeing how smoothly he fits into the mechanics of a police procedural; his range is demonstrated well here, driving home the tragedy of his brief career. St. Jacques walks a fine line between hardass and parody, but never loses his balance; together, they make one of the best cop-partner teams I've ever seen. Calvin Lockhart does quite well as Deke O'Malley, the slick, charismatic leader of a "Back to Africa" movement; the gorgeous Judy Pace has a magnetically vicious energy as his suspicious lover. An added treat is Redd Foxx's small role as a good-natured bum, who stumbles upon the titular bale of cotton; he has a great scene with a junkdealer (Lou Jacobi) where they haggle over the cotton's price, and the final gag, involving him, is delightful. Cleavon Little, of BLAZING SADDLES fame, has an interesting cameo as a drug-addicted conman. Ossie Davis' direction is sharp and witty, overcoming the occasional convolutions of the script (co-written by him with Arnold Perl). The action scenes are thrilling, and the portrait of 70s Harlem is vivid, aided greatly by Gerald Hirschfeld's photography; Galt MacDermot's score is quite good as well. The plot, as noted, is a bit muddled at times, but one's attention is more than held throughout. An overlooked classic, COTTON COMES TO HARLEM isn't just perfect for blaxploitation fans, but also for fans of police dramas.

Ben B (nl) wrote: okay so, king matthau is in this one with the actual king. all kidding aside, it's a great film; a "musical film noir" set in new orleans. and who said elvis can't act?

Jonathan R (jp) wrote: One of Cary Grant's better comedies, this movie is really funny. It builds and sustains wonderful comedic and romantic tension straight through to the end.

Naga T (us) wrote: Took time but saw this beautiful flick yesterday on Netflix. Apart from simple but breathtaking portrayal of Asa, the kid who steals the show is somewhat unknown Jake Davies as Luke. Disturbing, yet powerful. A poignant display of emotions, but somehow diluted the cause at the end.

Sara W (fr) wrote: This was a slightly different romantic comedy. Sometimes it was down right hilarious. Loved all the characters, Esp. the Mayor!! lol How funny was he?! I think it was worth seeing, but then again, I adore Colin Firth.

Cynthia S (it) wrote: Disturbing film documenting the death and destruction of a nation torn apart by religious differences. Some very disturbing scenes of babies and children caught in the midst of the killing, and insanity. The actual footage used in this movie is really difficult to view, but needed to be shown. The newspeople covering the stories in these war torn countries are very brave (or crazy?) people. Kudos to them.....
