Byron B (it) wrote: Some people really like fonts. I am not one who is interested in this much detail about typography. For a doc about graphic design and advertising, Art & Copy is slightly better. I thought this would at least be about fonts in general, but it really is almost exclusively about one font, Helvetica, the "Swiss" typeface. Here we are presented with three schools of thought about Helvetica. There are people who think Helvetica is the only appropriate, legible, modern font for all advertising. There are others who rebel against this notion and use fonts that are themselves graphical, funky and postmodern. Then there are also a few who try to use the standard shape of Helvetica letters in new, fractured, post-postmodern ways. Again it is a mixed bag with some of the interviewees being more entertaining than others.

Buggy B (jp) wrote: Not exactly the happiest movie, it's a suburban drama along the lines of The Ice Storm or American Beauty combining dark humour with tragedy just not quite as well as those movies did. Still strong performances especially from Sigourney Weaver who gives a penetrating portrait as the mother of this dysfunctional clan as we follow year in the life of her family, left devastated by the suicide of the eldest son, a champion swimmer. Jeff Daniels is, wow, quite an asshole here. Very unlikeable and unredeemed by the end. He shows his pain by verbally striking out at his family. Emile Hirshe is young here but does a fantastic job and I really enjoyed the relationship he had with his mother. A decent movie about a family fighting to hold on and make sense of it all. 8/20/14

Amanda N (gb) wrote: I was told to read the screenplay to this film by an industry professional who claimed the script was far better than the movie. I wasn't expecting much, but she was right. The script was pretty good. I certainly don't think it was "one of the most brilliant contemporary screenplays", as she put it, but it was really good. Unfortunately, "Elizabethtown" is more of a how to squander a good script in every way instructional guide than it is an entertaining piece of cinema. A decent (if not convoluted) plot and likable characters are ruined by poor direction, bad editing and annoying performances as well as a soundtrack that doesn't seem to jive with the film's boring imagery. The casting was very, very bad, but it was the editing that really killed the movie. Granted, the screenplay was a little long, so heavy editing was needed. It was the editing choices that were the problem. It was off-kilter and weird. It's just unfortunate seeing as how the full, unedited screenplay is actually pretty good.

Daniel D (it) wrote: Mass Appeal stars Jack Lemmon, as a priest who's been in this long enough to bend the rules. He takes Mark Dolson under his wing, an extreme progressive who never sees a middle ground. The character Mark is poorly drafted, he thinks lying is an inexcusable sin, but has openly stated that he believes Jesus was gay for John. He's to much of a contradiction, and a character that's hard to like, but then again everyone but Jack Lemmon played over the top characters in this film. Mass Appeal has a cozy mood as you can just sit back and watch, it's not an essential church drama, but does beg a few important questions.

Akira J (it) wrote: One of the most insane, random and funny movies I've ever seen. To me it's a parody of both musicals and the 50s.
