JeanFrancois V (jp) wrote: From director Stephen Poliakoff comes one of those movies about a woman who may be going mad or may be right about everybody around her being part of some horrid conspiracy. Unlike "Rosemary's Baby", however, it doesn't have to do with satanists, but with people seeking peace with Hitler, and willing to cross a few lines to achieve it. I found the buildup very atmospheric, but the film explores some dark territory, a bit like Poliakoff's earlier "Capturing Mary", and if you are a cat person like myself, you might be distressed by what happens to Britain's pets at the end (it's war, you see, and arrangements had to be made.) The cast is quite impressive, though a couple of the British stars get killed quite early (I'm not saying who.) Bill Nighy was particularly good as Garai's father, more subtle than in most of the films I've seen him in. The ending was a bit of a letdown: as the film had a dreamlike quality to it, I expected a twist a la "The Others" or "The Sixth Sense", which didn't come.

Deb S (ag) wrote: The film is set in Norfolk in the summer of 1939, on the eve of the outbreak of war. Our protagonist is Anne Keyes, an actress and adopted daughter of Sir Alexander Keyes (Bill Nighy), a wealthy and influential Conservative Member of Parliament. Anne, also known as Glorious accidentally stumbles upon evidence of a secret conspiracy of the upper-class English society desperate to appease Hitler, if only to preserve its own way of life at all costs. As the conspirators are ruthless people who have murdered at least two people who opposed their aims, Anne finds that her life under threat. Moreover, she is horrified to find that some members of her own family may be involved in this sinister plot. The conspiracy where everyone seems against her builds up subtly leading to an ever-present sense of menace and claustrophobic atmosphere.

Sally Field was not bad in it, but I found it hard to identity with her character at all. Yes, Norma Rae Webster in the film fought for unions and rights, but at the same time she was obsessive, slept around, neglected her kids, and whined about every little thing. Though I agree with the films message, overall, this did little to nothing for me.
