(kr) wrote: Could have been a lot more better. Weak script and cinematography. Acting was good though.A little flaw that seemed really stupid to me was... 'How could a 7 year old boy cry in the voice of a 3 year old kid???' [when they were in jail].Anyways, still worth watching.p.s. Maria Wasti was awesome.

(gb) wrote: its form and visuals are surely good. but...there's no point in showing everything in a naturalistic way unless a director wants to make a case, and unfortunately, this film apparently lacked any purpose apart from showing how 'animalish' our lives are (which I suppose we already know). Thus, all those images of old dying people, people going trough ordeals in search of a job etc. were IMHO pointless and seen a thousand times before. I guess that the ultimate movie of this kind will just show an hour-and-a-half session of peeing and pooping.

This is a great film to watch before HERO to get a more standard historical telling of the story of China's first Emperor. It's not stuffy at all. Most of the characters are a little wacky. Hard not to see it as a parallel to state sanctioned historiography of Mao. Chinese unity is paramount, there will be blood.

Director Ken Loach is one of few film makers who has the ability to create a largely true to life depiction of life at the bottom step of British life that is both bleakly honest, bitingly tragic, yet still comedic and enjoyable to watch. Above all else this is a tale of redemption that has the ability to show its main character as a real human being with both a very good and a very bad side to his life unlike so many films with plain simple good guys and bad guys. This isn't a rival to Loach's best work, but there's enough here to make this worthy of a watch.
