Jonathan S (nl) wrote: Martial arts movies like Revenge of the Ninja really only are required to do one thing: give you high body counts with plenty of creative gore. And to that end, this film really does hit the mark. While the plot is one of those pretty plentiful in the 80s (drugs, broads, and double crossings) it really is only the bare bones framework to hang a pair of ninjas at odds with both one another and a crime boss. Filmed in stunningly beautiful, albeit peculiarly bright, Salt Lake City, the stuntmen all get to do their thing in back allies, on playgrounds, and most excitingly, on rooftops of many of the downtown skyscrapers. There's plenty of clever devices the ninjas put to good use doing what they need to do best: kill people. But, unfortunately, the incorporation of standard ninja weapons like stealth or darkness seems lost here. There are boobies, there is plenty of flippantly used salty language, and there is a young child put into peril. However, the latter seems to be more capable of kicking ass and taking names than many of the others, so I guess it works out all right. The acting is terrible, the voice overs expectantly worse, and there really isn't much here you can't find anywhere else. But you could spend a worse ninety minutes on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
