Ironically, it's about loneliness rather than interconnectedness. This film has extraordinary visuals thanks to director Wong Kar-wai. Every shot is an impressionist painting and colors are juxtaposed in ways that are both surprising and beautiful. Exciting blurred motion sequences are followed by peaceful stagnation. Although focused on themes of loneliness and the isolation of social life and individuality, this is an incredibly joy-inducing film. The second story in particular is highly engaging because of its quirky sense of romance. The uniqueness of how the characters meet and how they go about getting to know each other (however unconventionally) is a great source of the humor throughout the film. At its most basic level, this is a grade-A romantic comedy. I can say nothing else, but please see this utterly delightful masterpiece. (my apologies for all the gushing)

Steve G (ru) wrote: It truly is a tragedy in every sense of the word. As much as any I have seen. It's nothing short of torture, portrayed in cinematic form. The level of depravity displayed is unconscionable. The first half is very difficult to watch. But the second half become extremely engaging. It's what makes the movie. It is a powerful anti-slavery film, where the liberation is extremely cathartic. Sansho is among the most evil villains in filmdom. His arrest is genuinely one of the most exhilarating scenes I have ever seen. The unbridled joy of liberation. And what can I say of the ending? It's mot an exaggeration to say that it was unfathomably touching.A couple of side notes. The false gods thing bugged me. There is some good acting, but I should point out that there was no shortage of overacting. It does seem that Mizoguchi has a concubine obsession in his films.Overall, this film's strength is displaying faith & mercy in religion, over power & self-interest. Solid. Better than Ugetsu.
