The idea that the Bermuda Triangle was caused by an alien ship under the waters was a good idea. Sadly everything else was bad.The acting was simply appalling, and the 'Independence Day' resolution was sickening with so much American Machismo (tm).Pass....

(de) wrote: AMANDLA! gives one an insight to the interplay and direct connectivity that music had with "The Struggle" - with musical giants - of Freedom Songs, Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Abdullah Ibrahim and others, delivering their perspectives - narratives and specific examples of how the struggle and music were indeed intertwined.Though many (especially activists) were aware of this interplay between the struggle and music, it was nevertheless very moving to have it presented - laid out as Lee Hirsch's narrative displayed, for he too became drawn into the very depths of this underlying current that swept through our people back home.Music, song and dance were further avenues whereby those silenced - denied free speech, were able to use a medium known and loved by all. These somewhat unknown forms of protest; cries of agony were transmitted through music - to those who were able to understand, feel and empathise. What was quite remarkable, was the absence of "in your face" depiction's of the injustices; Lee instead choosing to have the story told from within our country - by our own people; using the power of gentle persuasion to get his heartfelt message across. The sharing of pain and anguish, was evident by those who attended this intimate screening of AMANDLA!There were several aspects of the documentary that hit home - really hard ...In one scene, one of Pretoria Central's prison warders - who doubled as a hangman, spoke with glee of the power he had over the sentenced and how he got such thrills over the whole ability to take a life. Pretoria Central was one of the prisons where I was held. As Jeremy Cronin said - we whitey's were housed at Pretoria while Nelson Mandela and comrades of colour were held out on Robben Island.Only by knowing how these swine think, feel and try to rationalise their actions, can one really get to the bottom of their way of thinking.Whereas many milled about downing their much needed refreshments, others hung about - in almost mute exhaustion, at what had been so sensitivey portrayed on screen and how it effected them. I was truly moved - virtually drained with emotion, especially at seeing some of my comrades from the 70's appear within the documentary.(Dolly Radebe - one of the two elderly women portrayed throughout the film, is the mother of beautiful Ethel Radebe, with whom I had become friends in the early 70's. The "R" of Radebe is pronounced the same as the "H" in L'Haim or Hunukkah)

(mx) wrote: In the vein of Fantasia, but not really as coherent. A real jumble of shorts, but an entertaining one nonetheless. I particularly liked the "Bumble Boogie" segment. It's a charming little diversion, and rather typical for Disney, but it's quite fortunate that they eventually returned to full narrative features.
(us) wrote: Really run of the mill political drama. Bleak, cold, dark New York setting makes it quickly apparent that corruption will be rife in the ensuing Mayoral race. There to pull all the pieces together is an incredibly slow and reliably unconvincing Mark Wahlberg. Catherin Zeta-Jones puts on a hammy performance and Crowe plays the obvious fall guy. This is horrible, predictable, schmalzy. Strangely the plot never even fully reconciles the main leads romantic interest. There's no consistency yo the relationship and then suddenly the whole story abruptly stops. Almost everything about this film is dreadful. Not a fan to say the least.
