A nostalgia trek for fans and a great introduction to newcomers, not that heavy handed with references, but nothing to alienating for newcomers. Mostly the performances are good, and most of the cast get an opportunity to shine. The villain is somewhat lacking and wasted, and if you have seen the tv spots spoils the whole plot. There is some wasted time on things that do not add anything to the film, where other things that needed the time are overlooked in favour of other elements. It has taken a few years and two films to get here, but it looks like Star Trek is back on track.

Though poignant, this works both ways. Seeing Ichi old, fat and weary, his humanity (and at times, his sanity) slowly draining away, he's a sad sight, yet when he bursts into action it's clear he's lost none of his deadly edge. But placing him into a story that seems to be little different from a great many before and it's hard to muster any new excitement. The film bears a strong resemblance to Takeshi Kitano's 2003 remake (obviously not Katsu's fault), but there hundreds of ideas about new and old features of the Zatoichi world were tinkered with; it's quite obvious Katsu is less concerned with creating a completely new story than showing what Ichi looks like after a 15 year hiatus. That said, the film is still a riveting action-packed drama, with subtle, scintillating cinemtaography and a truly awesome finale. It's good entertainment, but nothing special. The originals are probably the best

I think both could've been winners if the producers had just not gotten so extreme with them. Cutting ones nipples off, unnecessary. The public intercourse scenes, unnecessary. Shoving a shotgun where the sun doesn't shine, totally unnecessary. There's just so much fun to be had here and it's spoiled by some stupidity. I just get the impression film makers always want to go one step further down the crude, violence path. More is not always better. Ironic to see David Carradine in this film portraying a bit of a pervert. Cameo by the Dean of Mean, Keith Jardine.
