Ashley H (kr) wrote: Brick Mansions is a disappointing film. It is about an undercover Detroit cop navigates a dangerous neighborhood that's surrounded by a containment wall with the help of an ex-con in order to bring down a crime lord. Paul Walker and David Belle give horrible performances. The screenplay is badly written. Camille Delamarre did a terrible job directing this movie. I was not impressed with this motion picture.

Stuart K (ru) wrote: Directed by Joseph Sargent (The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974), MacArthur (1977) and Jaws: The Revenge (1987)) and written by William W. Norton (The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (1973), Big Bad Mama (1974) and Brannigan (1975)), this is a tough and down and dirty exploitation action film, which helped put it's star on the map shortly after the success of making Deliverence (1972). In Arkansas, Bobby "Gator" McKlusky (Burt Reynolds) is serving time in prison for running moonshine between counties. While in prison, Gator learns that his younger brother was murdered by corrupt Sheriff J.C Conners (Ned Beatty). While he tries to escape from prison to get even, he's caught by the law, but they tell him that Conners is being investigated, and they offer Gator the chance to go undercover to bring down Conners. Gator joins bootlegger Roy Boone (Bo Hopkins) and they try to get close to Conners. However, it's not long before Conners finds out about Gator, and he sends Big Bear (R.G. Armstrong) to put a stop to Gator. It comes across as a hillbilly take on Yojimbo (1960), with the lone stranger coming to down to bring down a baddie, only here, the baddie is the law. It has some unbelievable car chases throughout, and Reynolds has a rugged charm. Plus, Charles Bernstein's score was lifted for Kill Bill and Inglourious Basterds. Oh, Quentin!!

Eric B (mx) wrote: Part black comedy and part straight drama, "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg" is hard to classify. Perhaps "movies adapted from plays" is the most appropriate genre, because its staging has some of that typical drawing-room stiffness.Teacher/artist Bri (Alan Bates) and actress Sheila (Janet Suzman) are a sophisticated couple whose lives are saddled with a tragic burden: their disabled daughter Jo (Elizabeth Robillard, in her only film role). Alternately called a "spastic," a "vegetable" and other terms that may not be acceptable today, Jo looks about nine years old. She moans rather than speaks, has unfocused eyes and is not capable of voluntary movement. She only twitches with seizures.Bri and Sheila choose to deal with this awful situation through cynical wit ("God is a manic-depressive rugby footballer") and tart humor. The bulk of the script rests on their edgy interplay, and the full cast has only nine speaking parts. A babbling mother-in-law (Joan Hickson) is traditional comic relief, while family friends Freddie (Peter Bowles) and Pam (Sheila Gish) mirror our own discomfort. The other characters are fairly trivial. A scene on a tacky children's ride does add an amusing tour-guide part and a strangely uneventful Jean Marsh cameo.Bates is dazzling as usual, though his broad theatrics can be abrasive at times. Shakespearean actress Suzman is a fine foil, and also is game for some rather unnecessary nudity. The story's most powerful feature is its bold discussion of the euthanasia temptations that such parents shouldn't feel but inevitably do. The talk-based action drags a little, but a strong ending defies a scenario that seems wholly unresolvable. Director Peter Medak had quite a year between this film and the equally dangerous satire of "The Ruling Class."

Alex S (ru) wrote: The film's slow pace is perhaps one of the best things about it - and it all culminates in, what I consider to be, a perfect ending. Colin Farrell, Bredan Gleeson, and Ralph Fiennes also have excellent chemistry on screen.
