(us) wrote: Real enough to hurt. The characters of youth are all there: my favorite is the tomboy who prefers to be kicked out of school than lose her dignity; the one I can most identify with is the girl who forgives and compromises because she's unwilling to change her ideal of love. The ending is the kind I really hate...but that's just me.

I kind of figured out the twist halfway through the movie but was still interested in the relationship between Landau and Burstyn, so they didn't need to force-feed it down your throat. Still, Marty Landau gives a very impressive performance here.

(nl) wrote: somehow it doesn't quite work. it's a slow paced story, but the over the top performance by Walken keeps you watching (as does the very sexy Asia Argento) but it is all ruined at the end when the twists and double-crosses are explained by re-showing pretty much all the film's key scenes. sort of assumes the viewer is too dim to recall what they saw 30 minutes previously. but i assume this is due to the trouble of adapting a short story and trying not to end up with a short film as well

(de) wrote: From the director of "Onibaba" comes this 1968 fantasy horror tale that crushes the mystique of the samurai while simultaneously showing the true horrors of war. A mother and daughter who are raped and killed by a group of samurai make a ghostly pact with the gods to take the form of a cat to forever seek vengeance on not only their murders but by all samurai. The crisis occurs when the dutiful son who has been conscripted to fight returns as a reluctant mighty warrior and is charged with the task of finding the persons who are killing the village samurai. Shindo's film questions the male centric society of that period while showing you the sacrifices one makes during war. Literally a haunting film that works as both melodrama and horror.
(ag) wrote: Pretty slow to be honest and some very unnecessary scenes. The rape scene n the dead cat scene.. What the fuck?. Is that even necessary.?? I hate seeing that kind of shit. Otherwise Good actors n over-all plot (but like I said it was drawn out).
