Christopher and His Kind

In 1931 budding author Christopher Isherwood goes to Berlin at the invitation of his friend W. H. Auden for the gay sex that abounds in the city. Whilst working as an English teacher his housemates include bewigged old queen Gerald Hamilton and would-be actress Jean Ross, who sings tunelessly in a seedy cabaret club. They and others he meets get put into his stories. After a fling with sexy rent boy Caspar he falls for street sweeper Heinz, paying medical bills for the boy's sickly mother, to the disapproval of her other son, Nazi Gerhardt. With Fascism rapidly rising Christopher returns to London with Heinz but is unable to prevent his return to Germany when his visa expires. Years later Christopher, now a successful writer, returns to Berlin for a final meeting with Heinz, now married with children.

Ryan B (gb) wrote: I'm not sure what possessed me to watch this, maybe it was the description of the movie. It had the premise of a good movie but part of me got quite bored 3/4 of the way through it. I have to admit I didn't like it very much, I mean there were good parts to it but there wasn't really much to keep my attention, and one more thing, it was a little hard to tell whether it was a flashback or current time, it didn't say anything like, 24 hours earlier or later, it didn't have a good sense of time and that's really what confused me a little in this movie. Bottom line is, I would not watch this again. Unrecommended

Dylan D (au) wrote: Damsels in Distress is not a catchall sort of movie with wide, mass audience appeal. At best it's a niche film targeted at a specific audience. It's a movie for acquired tastes, a picture built on quirkiness and unusual, to say the least, characters, dialogue, situations, and settings. It's a sharp divide sort that will leave some in the audience laughing hysterically and others wondering what's so funny, never mind what's actually going on and/or what really defines these characters beyond their quest to reshape their school.

Jonathan P (nl) wrote: This one is arguably the most misunderstood of all of the Mormon movies in "Holy-wood" today, which is a terrible shame, because it is among the very best in the genre and contains a powerful message about the need of all of God's children for the Atonement of Christ. Richard Dutcher, in this sophomore effort, creates a compelling "whodunnit" murder mystery in the fictional Utah town of Brigham that will keep you guessing right until the haunting climactic scene.

Chris M (gb) wrote: I saw this on its original release, and then again recently. I'd forgotten quite how cold and alienating it is for a supposed 'erotic thriller'. Jeremy Irons is great as the English-Politician-Stiff who's married into generations of wealth and somehow feels trapped by it, such that he starts a terrifically dangerous, intense, sometimes violent affair with his son's girlfriend. And basically it goes downhill from there. There's plenty of sex, some of which seems so 'committed' it's almost laughable. Irons and Juliette Binoche deserve some kudos for throwing themselves into it (almost literally). But this never feels very intimate or comforting. It's aggressive, compulsive, and left me quite cold. It's definitely not 'happy' sex.Miranda Richardson is fantastic as Irons' wife, aristocratically prim and proper, and her scenes towards the end of the film are brilliant.

Jacob B (ag) wrote: Packed with plenty of laughs, blood and zombie gore with some entertaining performances from its four leads (Woody Harrelson steals the show), Zombieland, while not the best zombie movie out there, not only manages to bring back an interest in zombie movies after people no longer anticipated them since Shaun of the Dead came out on DVD but also manages to pack a lot of story into its brief run time.
