Tomas T (ru) wrote: An elderly farmer escapes the clutches of retiring home to spend his last moments on earth back at his good ol' corn farm. Surprised would be an underestimation of Abner Meecham's feelings when he finds his farm occupied by a "White Trash" family. The movie takes almost teasing like proportions in the beginning where Abner (Hal Holbrook) and the new man of the farmLonzo (Ray McKinnon) start measuring each others determination to stay at the farm. Soon enough the movie takes darker tone when the actions from both sides escalate. The movie keeps the cast simple and small which is the force of the movie. Hal Holbrook gives a touching role as the hard headed farmer refusing to let go of the one and only place he loves. Hal Holbrook gives a passionate role which can almost felt through the screen as Abner Meecham.Unfortunately a great lead in this case cannot compensate for the other downfalls of the movie. Being predictable and sad for a movie is not a good combination. Add in a slow pace and you have tough combination to crack even for the most patient of viewers. Still the movie could have fared much worse, it is definetly watchable drama with some heartwarming moments in it. Not bad.

Becky B (es) wrote: truly terrible. Watched the whole thing, but honestly, it was such a cheap looking movie. The story was so dull and cliche and the the main boy I felt overacted too much. I know it isn't meant to be a blockbuster, but meh.. it was kinda bad. I did feel it have some excitement, which was nice, but I just don't know.. it was just dull. 99.9% of the movie was set in the desert too :/ Cute for kids, but not for anyone past 10! I'll give it 2 stars as it wasn't terrible at all, just probably not for me.

Julie has a hidden motive for joining Vern but what could it be? Will Vern make it back to America or will Julie's selfish plan thwart his attempt to regain freedom?"We must talk again, messier. You have a brain. That makes two of us."Frank Borzage, director of 7th Heaven, A Farewell to Arms, Stage Door Canteen, The Mortal Storm, China Doll, Bad Girl, Man's Castle, and Stranded, delivers Strange Cargo. The storyline for this picture has excellent characters but is a bit boring at times. This is a definite huge step down from movies like Life Boat and Life of Pie with similar plots. The acting is amazing and the cast includes Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, Ian Hunter, and Peter Lorre."All I want is to get out of here and you happen to be going my way."I DVR'd this picture off Turner Classic Movies (TCM) because it starred the talented Joan Crawford. I will say this movie had great characters and a well written script; however, the movie definitely felt dry at times and fairly boring in spots. Overall, this is an above average movie that is just okay."There's nothing worth stealing around here but freedom."Grade: B-
