HM F (br) wrote: The lush beauty of New Zealand is the star attraction in this period adventure with two solid performances from its leads. Morrison brings an often exotic nobility to his on-the-lam fugitive, running from a crime he didn't commit. Winstone delivers a rugged persona to his tracker character, a man with a past that weigh upon him heavily even in far-off New Zealand. The logistics of the story are familiar but with a movie like this, its the performances that sell it to the audience; and this movie does it well. The historical context of the film lend the story an added interest. The ending certainly packs a neat twist and it leaves one wondering about the fates of its two lead characters.

Cameron A (us) wrote: ''Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace'' becomes too buried in stale politics, and the cast does little to support the story given their dry and placid performances. Though the pod race is exciting it is the only time in the film where Lucas attempts to entertain the audience. The run time is unbearably long given the overall pacing issues and lack of interesting plot, resulting in a less-than-stellar addition to the Star Wars canon.

rocknblues 8 (ru) wrote: Director Alan J. Pakula (All the President's Men, Klute)has delivered a solid courtroom drama. Granted, a lot of the courtroom drama feels a bit familiar in some ways, but it's not over the top and silly like we are accustomed to seeing. Raul Julia really stands out as the opportunistic defensive lawyer. Pretty much every character here is dirty, and pretty much none of them are easy to root for.The man on trial here clearly loves his family, but he gives in and has an affair with his wife, only to be pushed aside by the home wrecking victim when he isn't ambitious enough for her taste. The judge is corrupt, and the boss is an overbearing prick that abandons Rusty when times get tough. The only one seemingly worth having a lot of sympathy for is the Rusty's wife (played by Die Hard's Bonnie Bedelia)but her role is typically underwritten. The biggest weak link is Harrison Ford himself. Never once does he make it seem like he could be guilty of murder. So you're more or less interested in this movie for the performances and plot twists. Which you might or might not like. I want to give this a higher rating, but the lead performance tips you off that someone else committed the murder. After you finish watching the movie it will become obvious why this movie usually does not get mentioned when people talk about Harrison Ford's best movies.

Martin T (ru) wrote: Fred Zinnemann's vengeance manhunt tale is a sterling example of the genre, with deep contrast in the lighting (terrific cinematography courtesy of Robert Surtees), slow-burn tension, a descent into the underworld, and the past coming back to haunt you. Overall, this is a really solid and gripping piece of work, with some memorable moments and thoughtful post-war themes. Wonderful climax and resolution, too, and a clever use of sound. And something very unusual for its time: the credits are saved until the very end. The acting is mostly strong. Mary Astor as the world-weary hooker (never stated, but come on) stands out the most. Janet Leigh, in one of her earlier roles, is rather weak. Robert Ryan is menacing but could have been given a little more to work with. As the lead, Van Hesling does a fine job... not a very distinctive performance, but a good one. I'm tempted to give this is a higher rating, but it didn't quite push my buttons in that certain way.

Serge L (ca) wrote: I am partial to epic stories of ancient times. It brings to life legendary characters. It is sad that the works of Hypatia were mostly lost. The film depicts all religions and religious people as easily manipulated into murder by their fanatics. Not sure how accurate this can be. The early christians had a woman disciple of Jesus and a version of her gospels was discovered not too long ago. This might have been known in Hypatia times so their anti-female rhetoric may not be that accurate. Hypatia seems to have been better than depicted in the film as well.
