(it) wrote: I honestly have little idea what to make of this movie. Elements of the direction were Kubrickian. Parts were interesting. Others weren't. I'm not sure how it was intended to work together as a cohesive story. The pivotal shift, where the two women are introduced, is so random, I felt somewhat detached from the story after that. There was great drama insofar as the village plundering. And even the issue with the two women did become engrossing, especially in the field. But when I finally accepted the random plot change, the narrative involving the women in the mansion was extremely effective. It felt so creepy. There was also the notion of the "silly old men," who can never think rationally & always admit that their wives were right all along. I find this somewhat insultingly matriarchal. Sometimes women's emotional attachments get in the way of necessary male duty. I just feel a little perplexed about whether or not what I just saw was a great movie.
