Mauricio M (mx) wrote: Very interesting, melancholic, and somewhat uplifting movie with a few twists. It raises the questions of faith, sacrifice, and human nature. Almost religious in a "Matrix" kind of way. I thought it to be very original and worth watching again. A pretty intricate mix of storylines and themes occurring within the context of a Cafe in Philadelphia.

Pamela D (gb) wrote: I liked the fact that i was confused at the beginning, I wanted to know why Ling Ling was mute and weird and why she threw the brick at Mao Dabing. This film had the same appeal as Shadow Magic another but it wasnt really heartwarming. I loved how things fell into place at the end. Films like that seem to interest me some more. I havent seen Cinema Paradiso yet so i cant really make a comparison there. I did enjoy Yu Xia, hes a wonderful, passionate actor. If you're exploring foreign film or asian cinema like me, you MUST see this film. The concept of Electric Shadows was remarkable, it touched base on how film or the art of film plays a certain role in our lives or in this case, our childhood. I highly recommend this film.
Ian M (mx) wrote: Well, it was quite enjoyable... There were some pointless characters in it, which made me feel bad for the actors playing them, but a solidly okay movie. If you love supercross racing you'd definitely appreciate the movie. Sport always have to have a few hot knuckle-heads no matter what type of sport it is!!

He spoke out for his beliefs when he knew he had everything to lose and nothing to gain for himself. Ali IS a hero. He is unique and a sports personality of his exceptional character comes around once in a lifetime.

Allan C (kr) wrote: Lurid Giallo style of thriller is somewhat unique in that it's the only film of the era I can think of that tried emulate the Italian pulp genre. Faye Dunaway is a high fashion photographer who has premonitions of a series of icepick murders. Tommy Lee Jones is the detective trying to find the killer. Brad Dourif, Raul Julia and Rene Auberjonois are also part of Dunaway's entourage. John Carpenter was the original screenwriter on the film and I'd have been interested to see what his version of the film would have been. The story seemed quite different from his other films of the time, which seemed to be more claustrophobic and less sensational. Still, it's a solid thriller that stands out as pretty unique comported to similar thrillers of the 70s (Hitchcock, De Palma, et al.).
Jon C (gb) wrote: A neglected classicSuccessful in its time, this film has become unjustly neglected. It's unusual in being one of the few films that has Northeast Wisconsin associations. Directed by Howard Hawks (who grew up in Neenah) in his usual vigorous style, with a screenplay based on a novel by Appleton native Edna Ferber, it tells the story of a ruthless Wisconsin lumber baron (Edward Arnold) who lives in a mansion near Butte des Morts, and his best friend, a blond Swede played by Walter Brennan (!) in a role for which he won the 1937 Academy Award for best supporting actor. The story anticipates Citizen Kane in its portrayal of a man who gains immense wealth and power only to find that they can't buy happiness. There are also some amazing scenes early on of trees being felled and transported by river in far Northern Wisconsin. One of Hawks' better films, which is saying something, and highly recommended. No advisory to speak of except for a bar room brawl or two. The MGM Home Entertainment DVD is of good quality.
Eliabeth M (ag) wrote: Paul: Have you heard of extreme tourism?

Allan N (nl) wrote: It's difficult to rate these old films, of course they're out of context of today. The story was witty and well thought about. But it annoys me that Hitchcock mentioned this, as one of his own personal favorites along with the very annoying score.
