(gb) wrote: It isn't a good movie; but it was an important one. Much of it is soapy and heavy handed melodrama; and yet some of that tin pan alley dialogue sounds like it did come right out of life. People actually do talk like this in reality. The movie was in the early days of gay cinema - and with films like The Boys In The Band and The Killing of Sister George ahead of it, it was a welcome thing: a movie about dealing with accepting oneself and learning to like yourself and not apologize for who you are. It was a movie about the serious and real issues that gays of that era had. At least I did. It was a beacon of hope for every gay teenager of the early eighties, looking for guidance and proof that being gay WASN'T the crime we had been taught. The cast is gorgeous, even with their big period hair; and the title song by Roberta Flack is haunting and wonderful. Interesting trivia: Kate Jackson turned down the role of Mrs Kramer in Kramer Vs Kramer to do this movie. Meryl Streep took the other part and won an Oscar.

In 1964 the New York World's Fair was just beginning with all its future exhibits, the space race was heating up and I was watching Astroboy. It was a great time my imagination was ignited. This film helped do that more. The theme of a destroyed but great culture undone by its technology gave me the willies. Giant creatures jumping out at me was a new experience. Back then I had not seen Forbidden Planet but seeing it now the walk through towering Martian technology is strongly reminiscent of the still functioning Krell laboratory of the 1955 classic. Even some of the sound effects are similar.I also find it fun that the film makers tried also to be educational by adding various space facts while admonishing children to apply themselves to school. In short it was a lot of fun, especially Arnold Stang as "Nurtle the Turtle" an alternative to Jiminy Cricket. I can not say all the shows I have heard his voice in. Of course the film also improbably mixes in fantasy and magic, including a whale who can propel himself through space with his spout. But for me it worked. Probably a bit dated for older kids today but the young and the young in heart will still enjoy this animated morality tale.
