Dirty Like an Angel
Georges Deblache is a police inspector who is past middle age and who is so despondent about his life that he refuses to have a medical check-up, even though he suspects he has cancer. His partner is Didier Theron, who has recently married a woman whom he has worshipful feelings for -- feelings which don't stop him from routinely bedding the many women of color he encounters while doing his job. Georges takes a keen interest in his partner's unrealistically appreciated wife and pushes his way into her not entirely unwilling arms.

(it) wrote: A truly unique and bizarre film, Ben Wheatley's A Field in England is a surrealistic exploration of power and identity set against the background of the 17th Century English Civil War. Wheatley has achieved a reputation as a horror director of vision with his previous films: the amazing Kill List and the stylish black comedy Sightseers. Now, he takes us back in time and presents us with a story worthy of Kafka or Beckett that blends hallucinogenic mushrooms and alchemy into its tale of power struggles and the quest for individual freedom.

(de) wrote: Fairly run-of-the-mill ghost story elevated by some atmospheric direction by Peter Medak and a strong, understated turn from George C. Scott in the lead role. Scott plays a musician-composer who flees New England after a tragic accident claims the lives of his wife and daughter. He ends up in Washington state with a teaching post. He stays in an old house rented from the local historical society. Gradually he comes to realize that he isn't alone in the house, and that there is a certain force from beyond trying to get his attention. Trish Van Devere (Scott's real-life spouse) is on hand as a worker from the historical society who tries to help him solve the mystery, while Melvyn Douglas appears in a pivotal supporting role as an aging politician with some skeletons in his closet. Overall it's a well-made and entertaining entry in the horror genre, but true-blue horror fans shouldn't expect much out of it. This is one of those films that seems almost ashamed of its affiliation with the genre.

(us) wrote: This one is a little off. The first half I liked as the main character was set up and given his powers. He has a little fun with it and then the whole movie takes a turn for the dramatic but in a very weak way as it tries to hold on to the comedy for dear life.Watch it if you like Chevy Chase but don't expect much from it.
