It's really just the darkest soap opera you'll ever watch but Julianne Moore, you say? Count me in. A very weird film but, at the same time, almost entirely conventional when it comes to its main themes, 'Maps to the Stars' is left in the unusual position of being both fascinatingly successful and equally fascinatingly unsuccessful. Ultimately, I think the cast save the day here and, if you can handle films that are firmly unpleasant, this one should be to your liking overall. A few less characters (maybe just a singular character study) would have done a world of good here and certainly the main themes could have used some re-imagining (celebrity culture or something, yawn). It's clearly a disappointment but I wouldn't call it a failure. Cronenberg's recent filmography remains unsullied for the moment, at least in my eyes anyway.
Cheryl W (mx) wrote: I loved it! It's strange how people can have totally different opinions. Reviewers say it is too scatological. There was a gross-out fart scene,( and yet Blazing Saddles considered a classic for the same thing.) But the other raw references were comedic jabs at confounding social customs like circumcision and eunics. And I thought the writing and the acting was hilarious. Go figure!

Tommy Lee Jones still manages to look old and haggard in 1986 but he isn't terribly suited to the role of kick ass thief and spends a lot of the time looking a little uncomfortable as the character and having his ass kicked. Think Knightrider with some extra bits and you have what this film is. Was distracting and a good laugh but certainly mediocre with some amusing bits.
