Derek B (fr) wrote: What is most impressive is how despite the really rather strident "message" and the deliberately alienating effects (clumsy cuts, deliberate continuity mismatches, how practically no one is in focus for the first 15 minutes, and of course the sparse and utterly "unrealistic" set) you get drawn into the story and ultimately come to sympathise with Grace and feel sorry for her when her idealism falls utterly flat. A tribute to the power of the story and the performances. Never for a moment are you unaware that this is a film, the final chapter heading even tells you so, yet it is really quite engrossing. Von Trier manages not to oppress his heroine in quite as vicious a way as he usually does.

Ken S (ru) wrote: Jim Jarmusch's first major feature, after his 16mm feature length amateur effort "Permanent Vacation", "Stranger Than Paradise" showcases the story of hipster who reluctantly takes in his Hungarian cousin, forms a bond before she leaves for Cleveland, then goes to Cleveland to rescue her and take her to Florida. It is a slow moving indie flick, with some amateurish flat acting...but it is enjoyable because of the talent behind the camera, which actually elevates what could be a boring mess.

Truthfully i get more enjoyment from watching friends or Four Brothers.

Kevin P (nl) wrote: While not exactly the most sophisticated comedy out there, it's nevertheless one of the more memorable thanks to it's impactful characters and amusing sense of humor; allowing Mike Myers to rise up and emerge as a comedic icon of the 1990s and early 2000s (before it all went down the latrine with the "Cat in the Hat" adaptation and "the Love Guru").
