I thought it would have been something like New Jack City, but it doesn't even add up to it. The piano scene was the best scene in the movie because that's how I felt after watching it.

They plan to cover songs by the Blue Hearts, an 80's punk band whose most famous song is "Linda Linda." The leads all shine, especially Bae Du Na as Son, the Korean student, and Maeda Aki (Battle Royale) as the drummer, Yamada Kyoko. An interesting portrait of high school life and the things that go into planning a school festival. One of my favorite films.

Josh (David Wenham) is a nature photographer, visiting from England where he lives, who winds up in bed with Cin,(Susie Porter) who occasionally creates wedding dresses. They meet at a party and spend the next few days getting to know one another and beginning to share their thoughts and hopes and dreams and their past with one another. Over the course of time, we see them begin to really care about each other. The dialog is unforced and feels so natural, even when, documentary style, the characters are shown speaking to the camera. Rather than distracting, this viewer found the technique to be quite revealing and allowed the viewer to delve into their thought processes. It worked on every level for me. One begins to care deeply for the characters and where they are heading. Beautiful cinematography, a terrific set design and supporting characters who actually support the main story added up to one entertaining film with something to say, and that says it clearly. These are real people dealing with intimacy in an interesting way.

The film does work in a Werner Herzog kind of way in that it has a great sense of time and place, but the film falters when it comes to characterization and story. The story definitely has a creep factor Shields is auctioned off to the highest bidder or later when Keith Carradine marries the girl. Shields is good in the role as a child play acting at seducing much older men. Carradine on the other hand gives an unusually mannered performance and abandons his usually very good naturalistic and very relatable of performance. Not that anyone marrying a 12 year of is really all that relatable, but the story may have been more interesting if Malle had chosen to make Carradine's character less annoying and more of the types of charming characters Carridine more often plays. Susan Sarandon is good as Shield's neglectful mom, who abandons Shields at the bordello. Antonio Fargas and Barbara Steele also play employees of the bordello. Gorgeous photography by Ingmar Bergman's director of photography, Sven Nykvist, also helps the film greatly, but I do have to say that the off-putting subject matter, the unlikable characters (Shields included) and the mostly aimless storyline mostly soured me on the film.
