Hassan I (br) wrote: A passable, fairly entertaining horror film that's sadly let down by a lousy conclusion and dull characters. Apart from a fantastic performance from Johnny Depp, along with stunning visuals, there's not much going for this bland, totally forgettable thriller. The characters lack interesting qualities, the dialogue seems forced and the story itself seems to go nowhere. That being said, Johnny Depp is at the top of his game and gives one of his best performances to date. It's a complex, unpredictable character that Depp manages to bring to life even when the rest of the film is a bore. So do the visuals, which give the film a dark and creepy atmosphere. Unfortunately, it's a bland, highly disappointing conclusion that'll leave you unsatisfied. By then, you'll be wanting to get those wasted hours back...

Stephen M (gb) wrote: Given that Nicholas Blake's "The Beast Must Die" is one of my favourite crime novels, I was looking forward to this adaptation by Claude Chabrol, though I suspected beforehand that it might be slightly disappointing. Essentially a bereaved father's diary, recording a vengeful scheme to find and punish the man who killed his son in a hit-and-run accident, the book contains a stunning surprise that only really works properly on the page. The film works best as a touching, gradually developed love story between the father (Michel Duchaussoy) and the woman (Caroline Cellier) he uses as an unwitting pawn in his game of retribution. The final scene, in which our hero finds redemption in a fatherly act of self-sacrifice for a substitute son, is absolutely lovely. Jean Yanne is terrific as the villain.

Spencer H (es) wrote: I started the movie expecting a good movie, but as the film went on I realized that I was watching a masterpiece. Clint Eastwood plays one of the grumpiest, and probably one of my favorite characters of all time. The movie was surprisingly funny, moving, and every dramatic scene worked so well. Eastwood's Gran Torino is one of my favorite movies for sure.

Richard D (jp) wrote: I saw this film in the theater, and I hated it. I love Jarmusch, and I had never seen a film of his I didn't like until this one. So ... I thought I should give it another chance. While my reaction to it isn't as strong on second viewing, I still really don't like it. The vision offered in this film of vampires as some kind of aristocracy with much better taste than your average Joe (taste that very obviously matches Jarmusch's) is really the worst kind of vigorous back-patting. Yeah ... I share his taste ... but that doesn't really matter. No matter how good your taste is, it exhibits really really poor taste to be this proud of yourself for it. Normally, I might forgive a film for this indiscretion, but that's really all there is to it. There's not much else to like here.

Felicity F (kr) wrote: 'Speak' understands the influence other people can have on our lives, good or bad, sometimes without knowing it. Although I acknowledge that 'Speak' isn't wildly known around the community because of its confronting nature, the flashbacks are well put together in terms of their level of appearance due to triggers. However it would be nice to have an extending ending seeing as it makes the common mistake of distortion when it comes to clarity and confession. Not all problems go away once a confession is made, this movie like many in its time, fails to demonstrate this. With all that being said, it continues to be entertaining and intriguing.
