(us) wrote: Un Coeur en Hiver is a beauttifully photographed (Yves Angelo) exploration of exceptional artists and the relationship, if any, between their artistry and their emotional lives. Emmanuelle Beart plays an exceptional young violinist who is seduced by the artistry of a violin maker, played by Daniel Auteuil, who likewise is seduced by Beart's music. While the violin maker is clearly the "heart in Winter" unable to emotionally warm up, the violinist certainly is not constant or giving in love herself. Perhaps the message is that artists are totally absorbed only in their art, and incapable of the self-sacrifice required to create a loving relationship. The music, chiefly Ravel sonatas is ravishing. Both Beart and Anteuil are riveting portraying difficult characters with whom it could be hard for the audience to empathize. Minor characters playing a bookseller and an apprentice, provide a contrast of livelier, less self-absorbed "real" people. An elderly couple provide a glimpse of how, even loving, relationships end up.
