(br) wrote: i saw this on television and it was in french. i think i preferred it that way. I don't like the whole cast. Just Shirley Maclaine. I don't like the direction either i think. Just MaClaine, so it was a shame that she had a handful of scenes. I think her Golden Globe nod here was deserved, not enough to win though, just be noticed.

(es) wrote: There is some confusion as to what the film's about in the first place: after the striking opening, Japanese militarism is pushed into the backdrop, while Wu - as played by an especially unforthcoming Chen - remains a complete blank, and Tian isn't even interested much in the game of Go, the rhythms and strategies of which might - at a push - have sustained a feature. What's left are fragments of scenes rather than scenes themselves: a series of nods and gestures all but unfathomable in the absence of context. In the 104 minute version, at least, "The Go Master" looks horribly like one of those bowdlerised international cuts forced upon directors by producers keen to make a few extra bucks.

(au) wrote: It's probably a cheesy piece of crap, but I'd still like to see it to see how close to the actual legend they got it.UPDATE:Well, it is disgustingly cheesy! I lost a lot of respect for Cliff Robertson; supposedly, he penned the script, or at least helped with it, & got a writing credit for this piece trash...

(ca) wrote: I'm not really sure what was supposed to be going on during most of this movie, and it was pretty retarded in that early 90's sort of way, but I don't regret watching it. It has a scene with a placenta attacking a dude, so it wasn't all bad. Probably better if under the influence of something.

(it) wrote: Blair Brown is fantastic in this movie and Belushi is watchable, and occasionally charming. The feminist theme carries throughout. Nell never compromises and love still prevails.

(ag) wrote: Perhaps I was too drunk to appreciate the irony of this film when I saw it but, to me, It seemed like a bad high school project with ham actors on a very low budget making in-jokes. It was all a bit too whacky for me, Sorry Koudi.
(ru) wrote: Rating: 1.5 starsArthouse Rating: 2 starsAfter recently being vividly impressed via Touch of Evil, and seeing this Welles film on Cinemoi, I was very excited. My expectations were absolutely shattered and crushed. The plot was plain out a plain noir story, with nothing to push it forward. The camera work was irritatingly cutting for the opening scene. The narration, with the cheap accent by our protagonist, was only essential because the images couldn't speak for themselves. I was falling asleep watching this, and it wasn't close to late.
