Dylan S (au) wrote: Criminally underrated, expertly paced, and brilliantly lensed, The Black Dahlia is an evocative film noir that's complex, mysterious, at times baffling, and above all, enthralling. The acting leaves plenty to be desired, but that's almost the point: the film is at once a film noir and a satire of film noir. In essence, this film is what happens when film noir conventions are pushed to their extreme; all the elements are there in greater intensity. This is not a flaw with the film, as many have suggested, but is merely a characteristic of it. In addition, the script, which many have labeled "confusing" and "incoherent," is merely complex. It will take a while to process, but once understood, it makes perfect sense. Sadly marred by lukewarm critical response, The Black Dahlia remains an underrated gem in the film noir genre.

Zephaniah H (gb) wrote: Here we have only a terrific actor and a creative idea executed poorly. The potential an idea such as this has to be a better dark comedy or perhaps a crime thriller makes you wish for something better. A Creation like this could have used a rewrite, and today is open for reboot, something funnier as long as we still see Pesci, he is funny any time he is on screen and steals the show throughout the film. Had the plot centered around him rather than Comeau, this piece may have been much better. However this isn't the case and the distasteful slapstick isn't worth he time, I would not recommend it, unless of course you are a huge fan of Pesci, such as myself.

Manu G (ru) wrote: Love no matter what.Good Film! I found this to be a sweet and emotional film. The story takes you back in time, and brilliantly captures the attitudes and prejudices of small town life. Every actor in this film gives such a genuine performance that you can't help being sucked into their world, a world where what is said by the rich can either save or condemn as they see fit. Each location used in the film leaves an imprint on you, from the garage where the brothers always unite over a game of ping-pong to the romance of the abandoned farm where the sparks of love really begin to fly. "Inventing the Abbotts" is a coming of age story that captures the awkwardness of adolescence without all the cheese that so often pervades the genre. It is a tale of love and lust, rich and poor, pure and simple. All in all, "Inventing the Abbotts" is a splendid movie that *somehow* teaches you to love "no matter what". Set in the 1950s, Inventing the Abbotts is a dramatic look at the life of two boys from the wrong side of the tracks and their interaction with the three daughters of local aristocrat Lloyd Abbott. The boys, Jacey and Doug Holt, have only three things in common: their family, table tennis and chasing the beautiful Abbott sisters. Their father, a reckless risk-taker, lost his life through a wager with Lloyd Abbott, his then business partner.

Guy G (it) wrote: [75/B] BURN! is a small anti-colonialist epic, that dissects the capitalistic machinations behind a series of mid-19th Century political upheavals on the fictional Caribbean island of Queimada, loosely based upon Guadeloupe, and borrowing from the legend of American freebooter William Walker. Here, Walker is transformed into an expert British agent provocateur, working initially under the Admiralty and later for the direct interests of a sugar corporation, who employs a series of high-stakes manipulations and enterprising ethnic maneuvering, including robberies, coups d'etat and large-scale agricultural destruction, in order to achieve the economic and social conditions favorable to his patrons. Brando is excellent as this ingenious, deceitful, and increasingly disillusioned aristocrat, whose aspect subtly wanes as his plans ripen to fruition, yet who seems to rather thrive upon the evil of his trade as much as he does from the brandy he constantly imbibes. He is something of an unscrupulous Victorian James Bond, with little faith in any higher principle beyond his own considerable talent, though his detached professionalism becomes impossible to sustain in the traffic of double-crosses, cynical plots, and corruptions. Overall, a fascinating film, shot in intense, bloodshot colors and featuring stark arrays of dusty, impoverished, decaying Caribbean scenery and violent carnivalesque. Unfortunately, it all suffers from some hatchet editing, a few narrative lapses and, more importantly, the absence of any force to rival or compliment Brando's on-screen power. His fine performance and magnetism often dominate everything else the movie has to offer.

Brea K (de) wrote: Plot is difficult at times to follow, overall enjoyable but lacking in depth of story and character development. You're left wondering far too many things for a film so simple.

Joshua D (ag) wrote: bloody as heck and uber crazy, altogether a nightmare
