Octavia J (ru) wrote: Solidly average. It was interesting enough to keep me engaged but the big mystery is no mystery at all. There is never a true "who dun it?" question here. The acting was fine. Cinematography is good enough. But the story is unimaginative and predictable. There was one nice creepy twist at the very end however. This isn't a must see, but if you are running out of options on Netflix, this is an ok way to spend an hour and half.

Russell S (nl) wrote: For a movie that seemed so cutting edge in terms of it's visuals and special effects it never truly "catches fire" in the way it ought to do story-wise. It's certainly a good movie and a great achievement technically but it's plodding pace makes it oddly forgettable.

John B (ca) wrote: Sutherland and Fonda are absolutely brilliant in Klute. It is completely engaging in terms of the plot development and there is true intelligence to the characters.

Steven L (mx) wrote: I was impressed by the cinematography of this film-noir because of its diversity of framing and shot techniques, including the POV shot of Mike waking up from the hospital and one where Mike??s eye-line is away from the detectives questioning him. It is clear that Aldrich??s film is an example of an early film that set the foundation for many filmmaking conventions. I was confused by the genre??it seems to come from multiple places, thriller/suspense, comedy, and science fiction. The science fiction element of the piece was surprising, as it was not revealed until the end. Was this piece one of the earlier films in the science fiction genre?

Indi V (au) wrote: Two young kids try to steal from a railway car. One is caught and grows up to become a criminal, the other escapes and grows up to be a priest. A good premise, but this film doesn't do nearly enough with it.The criminal (James Cagney) is front and center here as a bad guy who we as an audience want to sympathize with. Sure, he's a gangster, but he does have some nice humane moment that show us that there may have been more to him than just a simple thug. Cagney is simply amazing in this movie, making the most out of every moment he's given and painting a very complex portrait of a very complex criminal.Sadly, the priest (Pat O'Brien) isn't as up to scratch. O'Brien doesn't bring the whole film down, but the film shortchanges him and shortchanges him hard. The vast majority of the film is devoted to Cagney. Cagney's motivations are clear, but O'Brien's are not. What made O'Brien decide to become a priest? Did their youthful escapades and near escape from the cops cause an epiphany in him? The film doesn't want to tell us.The action is fun and violent, but the actors playing the kids who worship Cagney just come off as a little hokey. A product of the time, I suppose.
