A tradition that's lasted over a thousand years shaken by a world who demands public spectacle. "Humbleness or humiliation?" asks Queen Elizabeth to her Prime Minister. ;) A must see!

(kr) wrote: While no less weird than any of the other Cremaster films, the second instalment does seem to have more of a storyline that is maybe slightly easier to follow. A murderer goes off in search of Harry Houdini in the afterlife (which appears to be made of golden honeycomb!), who he thinks had a love affair with his grandmother. Well, I did say 'slightly' easier to follow...
(gb) wrote: The story is both unpleasant and yet interesting. Few of the characters really connected with me. Ju Dou, becomes the object of sympathy right from the start. Her life is horrible, and even the relationship with Tianqing ultimately strikes me as unsatisfying, because frankly Tianqing was a wimp. The character of Tianqinq comes across as childish and immature and afraid of everything. In a way, the most powerful character was the adolescent Tianbai, Ju Dou's son. He only appears in the last part of the movie, but he comes across as completely hateful and totally unemotional. It all leads up to a tragic and confusing ending. The love scenes and violence are visual limited, because of Chinese limitations,I guess, But all in all Ju Dou is a stunning film and worth to watch.

(de) wrote: The film is a striking portrait of the rampant paranoia running through peoples mind in the 1950s, but James Mason's powerful performance as a man reaching breaking point and Barbara Rush as the put-upon wife can a strike a chord with audiences anytime today.
(ag) wrote: An enjoyable trifle, following the pattern of the rest of the series almost verbatim. The final unraveling of the mystery happens in a lazier manner than the other films, with Nick basically giving the play by play himself rather than through a Q & A with the suspects. The added element of music to this film was a nice element, but there isn't much more to do with the series. The fast and snappy pace of the early films just isn't matched here.

Filming under unimaginable conditions during the German Occupation, Carn, that unrivaled practitioner of Poetic Realsim, circumvented Nazi restrictions and industry shortages to miraculously complete a three-hour epic of lavish design, then the most expensive project in the history of the French film industry."

(ca) wrote: Law Abiding Citizen is a smart, innovative Thriller that's wholly implausible but nevertheless a whole lot of fun. It's Saw with less violence and a bit more of a focused structure and brain power, and even though much of the film plays out with an absurdity that's hard to ignore, the picture works as sheer and imaginative entertainment that's good enough to keep the audience guessing and immersed in a topsy-turvy world of deliciously-realized improbabilities. Rounded out by slick direction and solid acting, Law Abiding Citizen won't be up for a host of Oscars but it's certainly good enough to enjoy as a thinking man's Horror/Thriller delight.
