At first it seemed clumsy until I realised it is actually supposed to be this way as it is based on the traditional Japanese puppet theater called Bunraku. I think it's also supposed to be like a motion picture pop-up-book which is why everything looks like it's made from paper and cardboard and looks extremely stylised.

Willem Dafoe takes on the Travis Bickle role excep he doesn't shave his head or tries have thoughts of taken out a politcian. I fell in love with Dana Dalaney's character--she gives an ease performance.

Augustine H (jp) wrote: Like most of the WWII films, this film is more of the impact of the war rather than the war itself. I am not new to films on secret mission featuring Nazis. However, in terms of compromise and sacrifice, this film offers you a strong elaboration and detailed depiction. The tragedy at the end may seem cruel, yet somehow unavoidable if you are in their positions. Simone Signoret, like the character she played, is stunning and catches all the attention every moment she shows up. But the rescue is somehow unbelievable. How would the Germans ever let that happen? One more thing, the jackets wore by the protagonists remind me of Alain Delon in Le Samourai every time.
