Felicia's Journey

A solitary middle-aged bachelor and a naive Irish teenager transform one another's lives to arrive at a place of recognition, redemption and wisdom in Atom Egoyan's adaptation of William Trevor's celebrated 1994 novel. In fact, the first three minutes or so is one camera focused on a father's face as his son gives an acceptance speech. So much going on behind those eyes. The film is expertly shot with snippets of fantasy thrown in; and in the climax, the editing and music bring a great amount suspense and excitement to a largely academic paper trail. So what if there are more answers than questions? In this film, they serve to heighten the frustration felt by the main characters as they navigate their father-son relationship and professional differences.

Christopher S (us) wrote: While Jennifer Jones is very beautiful and a great actress, this film showed how much the film business thought of Asians. They had a wide eyed white woman playing a Chinese woman! Give me a break! It is almost as worse as having Mickey Rooney playing an Asian man in Breakfast at Tiffany's. As for the story, it was very good and it was one of the first films I could remember that discussed biracial people and the identity crisis many of them face daily. The chemistry between Jones and William Holden was very good but most women had excellent chemistry with Holden. While I loved the romance in the middle of the CCP revolution, it is tough to suspend the disbelief because of casting issues.
